Western nations in europe usually ended slavery parallel with their emancipation from feudalism. Class-based discrimination gradually receded in the late 19th Ctr. and ended across the board during the early 20th Ctr.
The USA is both a revolutionary force in this matter (emancipation war against the british colonialism / civil war to end slavery) as well as a late bloomer (civil rights for blacks established late in the 1950's).
Since the early 20th C. to mid 20th C. Unconditional Civil rights got established in western nations across the board. All capitalist in nature. In fact, free markets and private entrepreneurship were mayor forces in driving and funding civil rights movements.
Since the collapse of the UdSSR class and race-based oppression has ended in rusia / baltic nations, too. And since WWII Germany has transformed in one of the most progressive nations (which doesn't come without a price and problems on its own, especially in face of the current migrant crisis).

Evolution. When resources are scarce, your greatest competitors for the things you need are you with but a little different. Racism is a crude way to make an organism promote it's own genes, even in the absence of a family group. There's no turning it off, either. You just have to realize it and resist consciously.
