It was a massive scandal at the time, and popular subreddits like /r/gaming were flooded with people confirming it was scam. Some people even wanted to sue the company for malpractice and false advertisement, while other made petitions online. The developers were even forced to offer refunds on Steam, regardless of the amount of hours already put in it.
