they make money by selling ads targeted towards keywords. you type the keyword into a search, you see the ad.
they don't keep your searches around for later.

Any search engine needs to collect minimum data like keywords searched so it can get the algorithim to save them and give either latest or pushed up content as an output to the user.
So any search engine collects in example the ammount of seaches on a topic for the algorithim.
What confuses me is why duckduckgo doesnt give people access to their trending terms.
They say this wouldnt be possible due to the whole privacy thing.
They still need to do this so saying that is really fishy.
