situps are GREAT when done properly

bend your knees, scoot your ass close to your feet, push yourself/pull yourself UP towards your knees with your hands interlaced behind your head, and throw yourself/let your weight fall back down (your head shouldnt touch the floor, and your ass shouldnt rise off the floor)
