They are very different. The problem is that the Republicans have mostly stayed the same since the 90's where the Democrats have lurched very far to the left. So much so, that Trumps policies are nearly the same as the Democrats policies in the 90's, where the Democrats are pushing for social engineering, reparations for slavery, and many of them for all out socialism.
So yeah. I would have voted for Clinton in the 90's and I'll happily vote for Trump now. And so would the majority of Americans. That's why Trump got elected even though he is very coarse and unlikable, and it constantly attacked by the media. He represent the will of the majority of Americans, and that's why he won in 2016 and why he will win again in 2020.
