I always thought that was an interesting point in general. I knew hundreds of soldiers serving that weren't American when they joined. I even knew 1 Iraq native. Almost all of them told me how much they loved this country and what it gave them. Literally gave their bodies to our government because the American dream is THAT important to them. They don't jokn to kill people. Very few people do these days. That's just a part of war if it happens (and there are more soldiers dying in training or suicide than firefights now anyway).

Basically, there's an event that Medics attempt called the Expert Field Medical Badge. Soldiers in the medical field are tested under extreme situations for a week. Average success rate is 14-21% If you get it, it's a fancy pin for your uniform and the higher ups that sent you look good. I didn't want to go, but I was chosen to go over the other medics because I was arguably the one that knew the most. I was forced to memorize an insane amount of information, but what hurt me was the rucking. My platoon sgt made me ruck 12 miles 2-3 times a week with 60-80lbs on my back. After a month, I noticed a lot of pain in my feet. Got an xray, a 'profile' from the doctor saying I needed time off, and I got out of that EFMB. The pain never stopped and I eventually got an Xray. The doctor told me to carry on and try to rest up. I was on and off these profiles for a year before our bat was given a different doctor. Got another xray and this one saw that my feet had been torn apart from the inside out thanks to the weight and unnecessary extra training. Also from being untreated for a year. Over time, my feet being in pain made me walk different so it gave my knees arthritis and eventually travelled up to my back. I went from arguably the most valued medic in the bat to seen as garbage mainly because I was officially medically diagnosed as fucked up. That's where the bad shit really started happening.

I was an E6 cook making 115k with BAH and a SRB. All I did was make tacos for a few captains in San Francisco for four years

Before I joined, I had to lose around 70lbs and pass a prequal physical evaluation that I would absolutely not be able to pass before the weight loss.

When I joined, I was around 225lbs (but within the BMI standards somehow) and passed the prequal physical evaluation bare minimum on all 3 events.

When I left basic training, I was 179lbs and almost maxed out my physical evaluation scores. Basic is designed to get you in shape. If you make it in and aren't a turd, you won't need to worry about your physical shape at the start.

After basic and ait/osut, you'll do an hour long group workout session 5 days a week with your unit to attempt to keep you fit, but just about everyone worth their merit would go to the gym during lunch or after work. It becomes second nature quickly.

I had a 'boss' that was 18 years in and joined to get away from gang life after his brother was murdered. Some join for the healthcare and financial stability (pay sucks, but the military won't allow you to be active duty and homeless. They'll square you away). Blind patriotism is rarely the reason people join anymore in America, though it may be a part of it. Also, the military didn't blind me or brainwash me. I was a great soldier, but I was a left-center political mind and nothing changed that. When I wasn't in the field or training, the Army was a 5 day a week, 9-5 job. No one made me think anything different or act like a moron. There was no big plot to make me a brown person murderer. Hell, my job was to medically treat anyone. I'd even have to save lives of people we injured in combat and if I didn't try, I could go to jail.
