The important people aren’t the ones to fear. There’s literally too much local politics to bring you up to speed in one comment, but in brief:

Then the USA instigated the Arab spring, suddenly: civil war. Mass immigration from mercenaries who will profess to be religious warriors. Another concept westerners don’t have. One of his whole goals in power was to reduce the power these holy warriors historically had. The whole country gets BTFO
Two large ethnic groups still blame him for fucking up their country. Blood debts are important over there. You don’t even have that concept in America

I know that comment was long but that’s so brief, and only just internal political shit too. External politics was even more complicated. There’s not many countries that burned bridges with both superpowers during the Cold War and told them both to fuck off because he didn’t buy either of their bullshit. They responded by blaming him for shut they sponsored themselves.
And, he did himself no favours either to bedside. The lavish harems. The golden palaces. The ostentatious lifestyle. That doesn’t endear you to your jobless citizens. And internationally, all that got mocked in the western media. Particularly his female bodyguards. But westerners have no conceptual similarities in their culture that could explain female bodyguards. They saw it as a sex thing, assuming they were glorified hookers. Without understanding that in that part of the world, trusting random men is not easy, particularly when you’re in power for decades and a lot of your OG loyalists have died or retired. Hiring young males to be that close left him open to betrayal by a guy who wanted to try seizing power for himself. Whereas a women wouldn’t bother because even if she succeeded, her family would just step in and take power from her and give it to their patriarch. None of that is even a thing in western countries, so for westerners it’s impossible for them to understand. Which is why it’s so weird to listen to the hero’s with opinions that try to tell ya about how things work in these countries.

Yes, the Arab Spring shows how the West has a very bad picture of what's going on in the muslim world, or anywhere but the West, for that matter.
It's similar to why the US escalated the Vietnam War; McNamara stated that they didn't understand the situation back then. and even entering there was a bad idea.

Vietnam is another classic example. The VC thought the yanks were invading to colonise them like the French had. They were fighting for their lives and their lands. The yanks in power just wanted to stop communism and couldn’t even understand why the VC would consider them as potential colonisers. (The french colonial rule ended literally just a few years before the Vietnam War got into full swing. How the Americans couldn’t understand that is so weird to me but they just hadn’t got that concept in their vocabulary because they genuinely did not consider the USA to be a colonial power so it meant nothing to them, whereas for the VC, that was their main motivator)

Obviously I’m generalising wildly, westerners co e in all shapes and sizes and a wide spectrum of understanding of these issues. But the “westerners” I was describing are the normies, the masses who consume click bait journalism and equate reading/watching the media with receiving a well-rounded education. That’s a horrible attitude to have because it’s rooted in ignorance. But even very well educated westerners cling to that idea. That they understand issues because they watched the news, and that grants them the right to be able to profess a genuine opinion on something. Whereas the reality is, they are like Jon Snow when he goes to the wildlings: they know nothing and they’ll never truly understand. Opinions are just not worth having if you don’t know the situation you’re talking about.
You’re obviously experienced though, you’ve got more than enough right to give opinions because you’ve lived there, you know their society, how their culture works, what is normal for them. The majority of normie westerners don’t have any of that knowledge and they mightn’t even believe you if you told them because the concepts are so different to how western culture typically works.

Ya in hindsight it’s so clear that the US authorities got played in Vietnam. Similar to Iraq and the “45-minute imminent threat level WMD”-lies. The US powers in government and all of the three letter agencies got convinced to back the wrong guy, who common people would never rally behind, and then they got convinced that enforcing his rule violently would make the people love him. I mean, I genuinely don’t hate America or think they’re morons but that is some really fucked up foreign policy. Fine, they say they were desperate to resist Vietnam from falling into Soviet hands, but there has to be better ways to achieve that goal? Better vassals to install into power? Better ways to enforce power? Instead they launched a full WWII scale invasion and battered the country for a decade. Just horrific how small mistakes can snowball like that when people cling onto opinions they have that were made in ignorance of the reality on the ground. Seen it a lot over the past 20 years between Iraq, Afghanistan & Syria and the Arab Springs too. Just people in power who don’t understand what they are wading into with their money and armies.

Again, I was being brief in my earlier comment, this is all so complex. I do believe all of their decisions were taken with good intentions. Even more recent times, Bush & Obama meddling throughout the entire region. I’m convinced they thought they were doing the right thing. But I’m not stung he’s a fool. He made foolish decisions. But he was a smart guy, very intelligent, I don’t believe he knew he was being fed a bunch of bullshit. Same sentiment goes for Obama and bush. Both very intelligent in their own ways. Bush with social intelligence and Obama with academic intelligence. But they made awfully foolish decisions. Obama’s push to “invest” millions by paying tens of thousands of recruits to train for the Syrian rebel’s was a classic foolish blunder if you understood Syria as it was back then. Thousands of unemployed men suddenly given an opportunity at getting free money, of course all sorts of people would sign up. Very few of them cared about the “message of freedom” that the USA was selling them. Most had no intention to fight, they just took the pay and deserted. Less than 5% actually fought against Assad for the US backed revels. Around 20% flipped against the US to fight for ISIS and even pro-Assad forces. Total clusterfuck and billions of US tax dollars pissed away
