Hi user! I want to find abandoned bitcoins. What should I do...

Hi user! I want to find abandoned bitcoins. What should I do? I'm thinking of buying old HDDs and searching them for wallet.dat file. If the drive will be empty, I will use undelete and unformat tools. But I'm not sure if they work well. May be I will find something interesting else, who knows. Some secret files or images of humans. Give me good advices on my way, I beg you!

Dont do it. Let this idea go.

Sounds like a great idea, user.

Even if there will be no useful data on HDD, I can disassemble them and take away powerful magnets. I'm not sure what I can do if I will have a lot of powerful magnets.

May be this have something with real life treasure hunting. For example, treasure hunter can have a shovel and maps and metal detector. If he is lucky, he can find old coins or something valuable else. Same is me.

You could spend thousands of dollars on this and never find anything. It would be faster to work a minimum wage job and SAVE the money to buy a bitcoin.

Well, I have normal job and I already save money for my future. But I want to have a lot of fucking money to have luxury life, fuck yeah! Why not. So, I can spend not so much money. For example, 1 old HDD costs about 15$. I can buy one HDD a month and investigate it. So, I will spend about 180$ per year, no so much. But it will be fascinating! Even more! I can buy HDD for 15$ and then I can try to sell it again. Sounds like a plan!

Whatever dude. Myself, I buy lottery tickets. You do what works for you.

You'd probably have better chances trying to brute-force known lost bitcoin wallets, particularly as available computing power increases over time, the cryptographic problem is static, and the pool of rich, lost bitcoin wallets on working disks is steadily decreasing as time goes on (both in raw numbers and proportionately)

But how should I brute-force them if I don't have access to them? May be I didn't understand you well.

The chance of finding a wallet.dat^dellcomputers does not compute. Scraping the metal is more valuable. The one story you heard of a hard drive filled with coins would be unrecoverable.

omg the dumbass-ness at some point becomes totally amazing. put the neodymium mags on your oil filter and make your car last longer... wtf?

The bitcoins don't "exist". They're basically just a number assigned to a cryptographic key. If you can get the key you can then "transfer" the lost bitcoins to a real wallet.
It's insanely hard with current computing power - "billions of years" hard. But it's still likely an easier task than finding that shrinking pool of lost hard disks, and *then* cracking the passcode on those wallet files.

Nice try lizardman

By the way, people. When bitcoin just appeared in 2010, I started mining on my desktop PC. It was easy in 2010 on regular CPU, even not on GPU. It was cheap and the cost was about 10c. So, the miner software was working on my PC for couple of months. Then I switched back from Linux to Windows and I stopped mining. Then some problem happened to my HDD and it stopped working. I changed it to a new one. And then I disassembled it to remove magnets and threw the disks away. Years passed and the price of bitcoin raised. Now I don't own that disk, but I think that there are a lot of same disks in the world waiting for someone who will help them to get life.

>Nice try lizardman
You don't have any proofs.

Oh.. Do I really need password for wallet.dat? I forgot about it. This ruins my plan.((

May be not only lost HDD's, but also lost cloud storages.

For example, to find metal, there are metal detectors in the world. May be there is a possibility to have the same tool to search tons of data for valuable bytes.

And what concerns treasure hunting. You know, there are powerful magnets. You can buy such for ~50$, put it on the rope and then throw it in a lake, a river or well. Then you can have some metal grabbed on your magnet.

Unfortunately, only ferrum containg metals can be extracted such way. No gold and no silver.

good idea! you're more likely to find usernames and passwords for bank accounts though. that's still treasure hunting!

Glue them to your dick and become magnedick, the superhero.

No, you're just retarded. You're better off actually getting a metal detector and searching for treasures aka lost earrings at the beach.
At least you'll go out of your mom's basement that way

Well, if I would have billions of years, I could brut-force even some crypted winrar file. And the next billion of years I wll brute-force the password for the file. And there will be the answer for the main question in the world people and even gods can have. May be it would be 42 as usual, but may be something more surprising.

I already used metal detector at the beaces. Found coins, metal caps, one dolphin-shaped silver ring, few bullets, an axe and one hatch. No treasures.

This is only a waste of time and money my friend. Most of these HDD's will not contain anything, and recovering of a big HDD might take hours or even days. And this might not even guarantee you full access to the data. You have to be really fucking lucky to be able to find and fully recover a wallet on there.

If I'd had to guess, than i would say that for each HDD where you can find anything of interest (not even a wallet, but maybe other interesting things) there are about 100-1000 HDD's without anything. I'd be suprised if you get more than 5 recovered and searched through on a day, meaning that for one fucking wallet, which is most likely to be empty, you'd have to invest a month, as well as more than 1 kilodollar.

Defenetly not worth it. Use your time better, e.g. watch porn and fap until your dick glows like rudolfs nose, at least this will not cost you anything

Literally retarded. I have countless old hard drives from thousands of locations and I am 100% confident that there is no bitcoin data on any of them. The odds of you finding 'old bitcoin data' on a random hard drive is a billion to 1.

Not only that, even if you DID, the couple times I set it up, I never did anything with it because it was annoying. So, you'd find wallet files with 0 coins or .0000001 coins from a faucet and that's it. Just put $15 a week in a mutual fund and you'll have more money than you'd ever get from this fucking hair brained scheme.

OP you're a fucking moron.

The ace is a treasure unto itself. Ive found watches, car keys, mostly besides bottle caps and trash

OP is either not english or genuinely has a learning disability. He talks like an actual brainlet.

Op this is like going to a skip/dump and looking for a winning lottery ticket someone through out. Its astronomically improbable on so many levels.

With the difference, with this ticket he would at least get some money. Even if he finds an HDD with a wallet it most likely contains so little bitcoin that even if he finds one he still doesn't get any shit

Of course English is not my native language. (OP)

Well, may be I should switch back to treasure hunting with metal detector. With a little luck I could find even an HDD with lost bitcoin wallet XXXD

No, you.

Nice quads

1 what are the chances of finding a lottery ticket in a dump

And then what are the chances of it being a winning ticket.

Its almost impossible on two levels you fucking idiot.

>1 what are the chances of finding a lottery ticket in a dump
>And then what are the chances of it being a winning ticket.
1. Quite high, or what do you think happens with all those tickets that get bought but aren't winning tickets they get thrown in the trash.
Under the assumption that nearly every ticket lands in the trash at some point in time it only depends on the second term, which evaluates to around 1 in 300 million

>Its almost impossible on two levels you fucking idiot.
1 in 300 million isn't fucking impossible, I'd bet there are a few billion HDD's out there, with only a few 10k that acutally are recoverable and contain a bitcoin wallet.
So if you ask me the chances are not so different, but if you have a winning lottery ticket at least you get a few million dollars, with an HDD chances are quite high that the wallet doesn't contain much bitcoin at all

Quads that also bring an important lesson for ya all on Yea Forums. Does it get any better than this?

Your retarded evaluation only works if a dump/skip is entirely lottery tickets. Jesus christ you're stupid. Regardless OP would spend weeks searching dumps for hard drives, and then have the astronomically unlikely barrier of finding one with a wallet on, then that wallet would have to be valuable.

it would also have to be unencrypted as well, literally a multi tiered cake of unlikelyness.

this, this is the only way you could do it, OPs idea of buying them from people is even stupider as its likely they'll have been searched.

I assume that OP has access to all dumps of the area of the lotery. But I also assume that he has the money to buy all available hard drives.

So yeah if we are consider these two, than his odds for both are astronomically low

>I assume that OP has access to all dumps of the area of the lotery
not how lottery tickets work.

nothing.

ITT: b-tards get baited into doing maths homework because OP is so naive

what maths has been done? How is it bait if op is naive? Is this your first day here?
