I really wanna get a motorcycle Yea Forums, I have little to no experience riding one, and recommendations for my first bike? I’m thinking of a harley cruiser.

i think you should ride a cock instead.motorcycles are for people to poor to afford cars or people who think there edgy and cool because they'd rather die the minute they get into a wreck instead of driving a safe automobile instead
Get a Harley Sportster then.
Honda Africa twin dct. That's what I've landed in for my next bike.
Rode a 01 cbr600 from 2007 to 2017
Rode a 74 cb750 from 2010 to 2017
Any of the 1000 cc sport bikes are going to be fun, but I've decided I want something that I can do long range, is fast enough, and can go anywhere while carrying all my shit. So Africa twin is where I'm at right now.
You should ride a sportbike first, while your body can still handle it, then get a cruiser/tourer later. Dont get anything smaller than a 600. Cbr1000rr would be a good first bike. Keep your right hand under control and you'll be fine.
My dad was loyal to Triumph his entire life, and passed on his love of them to me. Got nothing against Harley, but I'll take my Trident any day over a Harley
I have over 30 years riding (yeah, oldfag, so what) and you will get a million different answers to this question. My recommendation is to begin with a starter bike. If you're not trolling that is. Harley's generally weigh in at more than 750 lbs (except sportsters and dynas.) A little 250 Kawasaki is going to be around 390, not cost as much to buy and not going to break your heart if you drop it. Top speed is less too. An inexperienced rider has way too many things to think about and needs less of a bike to be safe. You'll be able to sell your starter bike for almost what you paid for it. Then move on to something else. Also, if in the US, take a Motorcycle Safety Course. They're reasonably inexpensive, you'll be with others of the same skill level, and you will learn how to ride without killing yourself. Have fun, motorcycles aren't for everyone but they're something that's hard to explain if you love them.
As my instructor said, riding a motorcycle takes an aggressive personality. You can’t make weak decisions when you are doing something that has inherent danger. Take the class.
harleys are for those trumpfags who wear cheaply made chinese hats and worship the fact they buy american products yet their president gets all his shit made in china
kawasaki ninja, op
your instructor sounds like a dumb faggot
>hurr durr, dont ride motorcycles,im a pussy and thinks its to dangerous even though so are other things in life
driving a car also has "inherent danger". Obviously OP should learn to drive one but you don't really have to pay someone to teach you. Just make sure you have the proper equipment, know the laws and don't drive like a retard.
Skip the starter bike stage. Waste of time in my experience. Every. Single. Person. I've seen get a small bike to learn on has regretted it when 2 weeks later they are comfortable and looking for more power.
Buy the bike you want first. Keel your right hand under control and in two weeks you're right where you would've been, minus all the starter bike hassle.
You are going to drop your bike. Period. That's part of it. Either you will push just beyond the limit of friction, or someone in a car will help your bike find the pavement in some way. If you're not prepared to drop a bike, you cant ride.
how old are you?
Start small, weak and light. Chances are you will mess up rather sooner than later and it's a lot easier to correct if you're 10km/h too fast rather 100. It will also cause you much less trouble to pick up once you drop it (the heavier it is, the more likely this is to happen).
Turn on your brain
Really
You never see old overly agressive riders. They've all crashed and learned their lessons.
Drive calmly and enjoy riding, don't rush into blind corners or speed down narrow paths you barely know.
Be aware that it's a bit harder to guess the speed of a bike than that of a car, or to even spot the bike in the first place. People will overlook you in their rear-view mirror when they make a quick check, or will underestimate your speed. You have a very valid interest in not crashing! Therefore don't filter through traffic at a ludicrous speed, don't speed where others are around and generally leave some margin to recover the mistakes made by others.
If you feel like slowing down for no reason, slow down. I would not be alive to tell you this had I not done it that one time.
Mind your indicators. They don't turn off on their own and haptic feedback through gloves suck. Sometimes they stay on, and this causes crashes.
Always wear protective gear. All of it. Really. It makes the difference between being a bit shaken and being a cripple forever.
>you will get a million different answers to this question
>Either you will push just beyond the limit of friction, or someone in a car will help your bike find the pavement in some way
#truestory
i have had two major (ie: ambulance & police involved) bike accidents in my ~20yrs carrier(age 14-33). both times i was hit by a car running on the red light...
get the bike you like! get a used one first, so it's not you making the first $1000 scratch and you can sell it w/ little to no value loss if you want to try a different model
Really only two. Get a starter bike or dont. Dont is the obvious answer for people with self control, do is for people that dont.
makes no sense. you can die on a 50cc pocket bike if you are unlucky (or an idiot :-) )
I'm with you on that. Gently used bikes of nearly every model with less than 10K Miles on them are commonplace. Definitely get used first, or always.
get something really fast like a Kawasaki Ninja or Honda CBR so when you kill yourself you do a really good job of it
I respectfully disagree with your position.
This. Start with a 250.
Being unlucky or being an idiot is the riders fault, not the bike. So that's really irrelevant when it comes to your purchasing decision. As you stated, even a small bike can facilitate you in hurting yourself your a moron. If you fall into that category, you will get hurt regardless. So skip the small bike and buy what you want.
>and buy what you want.
my point exactly
I would advise you to enroll in the Motorcycle Safety Foundation class. They will teach you how to ride safe. Two days in class and two days riding their bikes in a parking lot. On completion, you get a little card that lets you get your endorsement and 15% off your insurance providing you pass the course. 10/10 would recommend.

make sure you do a test ride, and only purchase if you feel _comfortable_ with doing a full throttle
Indian > harley
>dct
Faggot
The class is generally free, gets your lower insurance, and usually don’t have to take the driving test for the state. Anything to avoid the DMV is good in my book
ill give u the 2putamadre ried of ure lief!
just loan me ten hunnerd
BIG second on this. MSF course is a must for any new rider.
Always wear a full face helmet. A helmet without a chin bar is a decoration IMO.
Always wear gloves. The first thing to touch the searing asphalt when you fall is your palms. A couple layers of kangaroo hide will take a LOT of punishment and will save your hands.
Boots, yeah. Armor, yeah.
Buy the machine you want and take some professional lessons before you go out on the road on your own, ride as though everyone else is a dickhead and you won't go far wrong.
wat
harleys are overpriced
Buy what you want, but buy it used. You'll save a shit load of money, and you're probably going to drop it in the first year anyway. Take a safety/training course.
never seeing a newbie try to get out of trouble by accelerating and totally cranking that throttle. get into more trouble when front wheel lifts off the ground and eventually up over said newbie's head because he was on a liter bike.
You ever ridden one? They're fucking slick. I rode for 20 years with 5 and 6 speed bikes. My daily cage is a 6 speed manual, rwd, mid engine. Dont knock the dct till you try it.
>no experience
>harley
kek, have fun not being able to pick it up when you drop it. go smaller for a first bike. trust me.
They had a bad teacher or lack self control or both. Sucks for them I guess.
Sympathetic responses can be almost eliminated by slowing the process down and dissecting it to pieces. Saying "left side is transmission, right side is stop and go, countersteering is backwards, let's go" is how those newbies get in trouble.
I have. They're shit.
Maybe hes a man and lifts weights, unlike you young lady
>kek, have fun not being able to pick it up when you drop it. go smaller for a first bike. trust me.
how stupid are you?
there is a proper technique on how to lift up a fucking gold wing, even if you are a 120 lbs girl
its on youtube, you can learn that in 15 minutes
i say be happy if that's your biggest problem after falling
That's interesting, when I rode one it was awesome.
Depends.
Getting back into riding 8 years ago after a 38 year absence, I bought a used BMW R1100r. Great bike but at 400+- lbs. it was a bit too small for interstate travel but great in the mountains. My 809 lb. Street Glide handles mountains AND interstate.
most people don't know how to lift a bike right away, i learned the hard way with my first bike. i mean, i was 14 at the time so my experience may have been a little different, sure. but starting lighter to learn is never a bad idea
Was that about a year ago?
nah, quite a few
Nah. They're priced at what people will pay for um.
if you really want to learn get a dirt bike. Anything alse is just instagram poser shit
Dirtbikes are for niggers and White trash
that's probably true for the US&A, but doesn't make the stated fact less accurate

point 25 of the link:
More than ½ of the accident-involved motorcycle riders had less than 5 months experience on the accident motorcycle, although the total street riding experience was almost 3 years. Motorcycle riders with dirt bike experience are significantly underrepresented in the accident data.
>Tl;dr
Nigger
get a grom
>Grom
I’m pretty sure OP isn’t a 12 yo girl.
ooh, the iron 883?
groms are for youtubers and instagram faggots only
Nothing says bitch like a Sportster
S1000rr it’s the best beginner bike
sportsters come with free tampons
enjoy your free health care
:(
I didn't know that. I guess it's best I heard it now, though. thx.
That's just the view from other male riders.
Women don't know/care. You could ride a Honda around and they'd think it was a Harley.
Only little pussies ride Harleys.
I’m not “little” but meow
harleys are for boomers
That’s unironically a bretty gud article
rent free
Why? I think they look cool
-OP
nothing says "i want to be seen as a badass biker" than riding a new harley
I think the bikes look cool and I’ve read they are more comfortable than crotch rockets, so am I supposed to say “oh no I won’t get something I want because people will make assumptions about my iintentions”
the only people judging guys on new harley's are the ones that can't afford one.... im from milwaukee harley is still king
there's plenty of more comfy options that don't look so poser
want a harley? look into the yamaha bolt. similar styling, similar riding position, and a much better price
Sportsters were the Motor Company’s racer. Small and powerful but it’s a really small bike and uncomfortable for most.
He’s retarded.
Bought my new 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special in August 2014 and had 2 miles on the odometer.
Right now it has almost 60k miles on it.
Not All Harley Riders.
there are exceptions to the rule, for sure. hell, i had an older harley for a while. but they abandoned their core market imo
Get what you pay for.
Idk, like the other oldfag with many years exp said, you'll get a million answers. Take the riding course, buy proper gear. If you're lucky and have friends with bikes, try to ride those to get an idea of what different bikes feel like. I think a good bike to start with is somewhere around a softtail equivalent. My first of that type was a yamaha xv700. Get a few years on that and then move on to something bigger if you want an ultra or a goldwing etc. You can find a nice 700-1000 cruiser type for reasonable prices, and its no big deal if you dump it over a few times (you will). This is what I replaced my old yamaha with for short rides.
Posting in a motorcycle bread mfw motorcycle captcha
Yeah, I'm thinking of getting my first airplane...a Boeing 737. Idiot
The MSF class is not free. Cost of taking that class is right around $150 but worth every cent.
Why the FUCK are you not in this server already?
