anyone actually interested in 1984 should also read hannah arendt.
she basically went to the trial of the guy who ran the trains to Auschwitz. she wrote about how normal the guy was, while also criticizing the jewish council for kidnapping the guy and basically having no evidence for conviction. it was a complete show trial.
when her work got published, she was called a self-hating jew, a victim blamer, sympathizing with actual nazis (not this starbucks nazi shit we see today) people complained that she didn't make the guy on trial as a foaming-at-the-mouth monster, while also criticizing the due-process of the court.
she was ostracized from society. lost friends and family.
she also makes a good political philosophy case for freedom of speech, rather than having perceived authority figures filter to you the information.
basically her argument is to always be distrustful of anyone who actively tries to silence your criticism from authority that doesn't actually exist - in her case it was any religious figure.
