Enough to survive, trying to balance it with going to college full time so I don't get to focus on growing the freelance business, which is just a problem of delayed gratification and current cashflow issues.

I'd be great if I could do just that full time but don't have the client base to quit my day job.

Any tips or advice about work you can do online from home?

I do a lot of my accounting work at home, but you still need to go out and get the work in person. Most banking and credit cards are online, and you can get quickbooks online or an emailed copy of quickbooks desktop files so you could do the work at home.

There is still a lot of not from home stuff you will have to do, but you can move most of a business to a home office if you have the work ethic.

Not OP, but don't you need a Masters ti do accounting? Was looking in to this myself until I saw that.

Experience trumps degrees in the business world, especially when it comes to being hired as a vendor rather than an employee.

The only thing you would need a masters for, or more accurately 150 credit hours of college courses, is if you were sitting for the CPA exam. And a CPA is much more a formality or signal of ability than it is the end all be all requirement to do accounting work.

I do web development for $60/hr... 40 hrs/week.

Its a contract to hire, so once I get off the contract it'll be less pay but salaried with benefits.

Also, bookkeeping and accounting are different things. There are zero education requirements to practice regardless of which you are performing, but accounting specifically has titles you can test and earn which signal ability to potential clients or employers.

My main services I offer to small businesses is bookkeeping reconciliation, book repair, and year end close. None of which are really in the realm of accounting, and can be billed at a rate lower than public accounting firms because there really is no reason to be paying a premium for those certifications or degrees when the work doesn't require that type of knowledge.

The only real issue I've ever run into with lacking degrees was when I was trying to get hired in a full time position that fit my experience, and that was because I didn't have a degree.

The best way to get into that is look for certifications rather than degrees. I'm still working on a dual major bs in accounting and management, but for the sake of convincing clients to use my service it's work looking at things such as Excel certifications, Quickbooks Pro Adviser status, or the Enrolled Agent Exam. All of which also mean you can charge more for those services

Word of advice in case you do decide to try this, buy an office quality printer, not a home printer.

You don't actually own a home, you still pay rent in the form of taxes, you just have a lot more responsibility like a sucker, especially if you are beholden to a CID, HOA, covenant, condo or townhome association, municipality, or other legal entity where the home resides that taxes you again and sets the rules you have to obey just to live in your "own" home.
