Personally, I think we should just tax the fuck out of guns and ammo, like cigarettes. In North Carolina, cigarettes are about 2 bucks a pack. Elsewhere else, they're 7-8 dollars a pack. That money is used by the state for research and treatment. Same thing applies here. a $200 gun should be a thousand dollars. A $20 box of ammo should be $100. The taxes can pay for security and medical treatment of victims. The people who support the public health issue should be the ones to support the remedy.

The infringement of the rights of those who do nothing wrong start at the victims. Then the state who responds. Then the hospitals and community ambulances and cops who all have to be paid for. As it stands, I pay for it with every other citizen. But you can bend that cost curve to the owners and sellers, where it belongs. It would also prevent many kids and put it out of the reach of affordability. If you really want one, you can still buy one. You can buy several. But there are taxes, like luxury taxes on expensive cars, yachts, etc. There are also yearly taxes on property, like registration fees on cars that could be applied to firearms.

You have the freedom to buy a house, taxes change. You have the freedom to buy a car, fees associated every year for registration renewal. Nobody owes you a house or car, and the quality or quantity of cars and houses is entirely dependent on the level of your personal wealth. Read some Harry Browne some time. He was not a proponent of taxes, but he was less a proponent of people being taxed for something they do not personally own or use. What you want is outright communism on your hobby. I say you should pay for the societal costs by taxing the items that bring the costs to the taxpaying base.
