This is not my interpretation. I see no reason for God to destroy a soul, the thing he created. We as people add onto that soul however and sometimes it may be necessary for some fat to be trimmed because it isn't in the plan. No where is stated that hell is a painful place, nor is it really mentioned at all. I just don't believe God would destroy any part of his creation
