It was formed to protect the self-evident, inalienable rights of the citizenry and to enact the will of the people. The government doesn't decide what is allowed or not allowed. The people decide, and then the government enforces that decision. Or, at least, that's the way it was intended. That intention has not always been abided by, but that is just more reason why the people must stay armed. If our government will do some of the things they've done in the face of millions of armed citizens, imagine the shit they'd pull if they had the monopoly on armed force.
