My family back is Sweeden had family artifacts dating back hundreds, if not a thousand years just sitting out of shelves or coffee tables in their farm house. The family bible was like 300 years old and it sat out on the entry way table. It was absolutely amazing to see first hand these artifacts and even more amazing to know that they were from many, many generations of my family. America has nothing like this and it actually makes me really sad to know that we will likely never have anything like that.

I feel a little pride in my vague English ancestry, but like many early American families most of my ancestors made an effort of forgetting European ties when migrating here, so I haven't got much to go on.
After the melting pot receives enough ingredients it stops being an Irish-German-Italian-Scotch-Norwegian-etc stew and starts to take on its own flavor, ie American stew, so it is no surprise that a large quantity of Americans identify more as Americans fullstop than Country-of-Origin-Americans.

There was a show on Norwegian TV called "alt for norge" where Americans came to Norway to find their roots.. they literally became norwegians.
