The political motivate comes from the long and influential history of oil companies lobbying. They have to or the oil companies will just buy there way as they have been for years.

it is an indisputable, proven fact among 99.9% (or some ridiculously high percentage like that) of the scientific community, that the current increase in planet average temperature is man made, that means that the CO2 and Methane we put into the atmosphere by cars, ships, airplanes, modern industry and modern agriculture and livestock farming is directly responsible for global warming.
we are currently at 1 degree Kelvin increase, and there exist several well researched scientific works that, if not a lot of people that have studied these effects for years are completely wrong, point to the fact that as soon as we reach about 2 degrees difference from when we started measuring, we enter a self-perpetuating cycle of global warming, due to things like permafrost thawing and releasing billions of tons of methane or some places becoming too hot and dry for trees to grow old, thus reducing the global "recycling" capacity of CO2 even more, and so on.

at that point, millions of people will lose their homes because of unbearable living conditions in great stretches of land, and we will have a very large refugee crisis, several orders of magnitude larger than what we have been experiencing for the last years, combined with world wide famine and more frequent and severe hurricanes and typhoons.

we could work together as a species and at least try to change something, or we can put our heads in the dirt and pretend like nothing is happening.

By this statement I pretty sure you do not understand how scientists get grant money. Yes there are gov funded studies, but you apply for them and the application process for any grant isnt a sure thing. Something like 10% of grant applications are accepted for funded. But when the gov say let say slashes the funding pool, of course then it becomes politicized because they have less of a chance to get funded. But then they dont bias the science but emphasize the importance of the research to people who arent involved but control the money poll (the gov)
