quality is one of the harder ones to sort, but you should always start from a mfg and look at as many as possible. I myself went through dozens before narrowing it down to a few.
my biggest criteria on my first was overall material/sculp quality, and skeleton. since i was going for durability, i went with silicone and since DS was one of the few that didnt hide their skeleton, i ended up liking the way they designed it.
in the end though, the thing that sold me instantly was one of the mfg pics.

estimated durability of a good TPE doll is 3-5yrs+(not many that old yet to know for sure)
estimated durability of most silicone dolls is 5yrs+ so not a huge difference compared to the price difference.
TPE dolls are generally 500-1k cheaper than a silicone doll of the same size if not more. TPE also holds advantages in the hole construction/feel and softness.
the biggest benifits of silicone are mold details, ease of maintenance, durability, and effective weight. due to the material pour style silicone dolls can be layered with lighter materials making composite dolls with a decent reduction in weight as a result.
the biggest factor though should be whatever doll calls to you. its a big investment, dont go with something "better" if its not exactly what you want and has that oh-so-perfect form for you.
