if you kid does something that cost you great personal expense (in either money, energy, or emotion), that's a paddlin' equivalent to the pain endured. Example: Kid nearly walks in front of moving bus, parent snatches them back in time. The parent has just endured the psychological image of their child's death and has expended extreme effort in order to prevent that situation from occurring. If that kid isn't immediately aware what he did was wrong, a spanking is in order. There isn't any other way to convey "What you were about to do was worse than this" to a child until they grow older and make their own, less costly mistakes to understand the concept of fatal consequences.

If you teach your child boundaries between the ages of 2 and 5 you will never need to hit your children for them to be well behaved. If you don’t set clear boundaries or just hit them when they do something wrong they will always be a problem.
If you act like an asshole around them though they will be an asshole. Children copy the parents from a young age and learn what is acceptable from them.
