In my case, I am the inattentive type so learning and studying used to be next to impossible unless I paced, tapped or crammed 12 hrs before my something was due. Sure there are kids who may seem indisciplined and are out there but generally the idea is to give kids meds like Vyvanse (a more gradual and safer stimulant) to develop habits and then use as needed to prevent tolerance or abuse. It's about a mind that is racing all the time whereas others can cruise.

You're totally right. I can forget a book I read if I get lost in the world I imagine in my head but doing things, seeing applications and interaction is how something sticks.

Problem is when I have to do large projects or continue thru school. 3 new projects or ideas start by the time I half-way finish one. Sadly, I'm going to med school soon and the first two years it's all books and theory, so while I hope my condition will be an assent when I'm bouncing all over the wards, doing clinicals and the meds can help if I have a 24 hr rotation, without treatment I would be fucked.

Not to nitpick user, but there's been brain imaging studies done to show regions of neural activity and diff parts light up more or less intensely with people who do and don't have ADHD. The brain is really fascinating, it's wired and elastic in the sense that it can be (partially) re-programed to compensate for some types of traumas but abnormal brain chemistry has both cognitive and physical effects.
