Im going into the Marines and am struggling between the Infantry MOS and choosing a civilian MOS for programming,
On one hand Id love to be a machine gunner and ride the humvees and the other hand I feel like I should choose a cyber security MOS.I feel like Id loose the true experience of the marines if I chose something nerdy.
Any marines got advice?

It's totally up to you. I'd suggest something you'd enjoy because it's going to eat up your time. Like , choose something that is good after the Marines.

I spent 9 years in the Corps. 7212 LAAD Gunner. # combat deployments to Iraq. I suggest Infantry. Your MOS alone won't qualify you for a civilian job when you get out. You'll still need training/school. Any questions for me?

Choose an mos that will actually benefit you when you go to the civilian sector, sure it's cool to do all the Moto Marine shit but once you get out you're shit out of luck with finding a job unless you want to work Law Enforcement.

Exactly. I’m two and a half years into my first contract. Enlisted to do comms, routing, switching, and servers, but it turns out we always just use the established network since it’s contracted out. We’re glorified help desk now.

My leadership knows fuck all about configurations or how to set up a MSX server, but they can run fast and clean real good.

I think starting pay Is atleast $1400 a month going into basic but im pretty sure its higher, saving the money from paychecks and buying the bare minimum id assume id spend atleast 5000$ in personal shit, even then I got atleast $65k left in the end

Our pay chart is online. Every branch gets paid the same per grade. If you’re going Marine Infantry you don’t get a bonus since you don’t do it for the money but instead for the pride and accomplishment.

06xx. It’s not bad since if you actually know your shit you’ll be the comm god and can do whatever you want, but you’ll be surrounded by people who don’t want to be there since the turnover is so high and the Marine Corps needs the spots filled at all times.

Regardless of where you go shits the same. Only MOS I’ve seen that’s different is ground repair, 28xx. But their requirements are so high to get promoted you probably won’t see E4 until you’re almost done with your contract. Crash fire rescue is skate as fuck. I’d recommend that if you want to do nothing for 4 years and get paid for it.

So I was Army not Marines but the best advice I can give you, go infantry in the Marines then switch branches and reclass to a cybersecurity MOS for the civilian skill set. Marines dont have to redo BCT when they switch branches, though you'll still have to go to AIT for your MOS, and you'll rank up way quicker swimming in a sea of POGs if you were a Marine first. Especially if you switch to Navy after the Marines, the original point of the Marines was to beat the shit out of the Navy if they got out of line after all, no one will fuck with you.

Either have the qaulifications or bust. Depending on what's going down worldwide (or within the US in terms of militarily) everything changes. Pick something you want in the long term, and settle for nothing less when you speak to a recruiter. This also includes any education prior to going in. A degree means officer, and that already means less hating life and more making money.

His job is to get you into the USMC as you are nothing more than a number, and he will do anything if it means that you're fully committed. Use this.

You cant do it right after OSUT, not entirely sure how it works on the Marine end because the branches operate differently but Army it's when you qualify for reenlistment, which means you have to fulfill the majority of your first contract before you can reclass or switch branches. Pretty sure Marines work the same way, but I hear they have a weird slot system where you can get stuck where you're at until someone replaces you to fill your slot.

The Marine Corps is good about helping you further your knowledge if you’re willing to. They have programs that help you get civilian certifications as well as pay for your degrees up to a doctorate without needing to use your GI bill. Also, there’s a bunch of extras like a free trip to Okinawa if you get stationed there, free baggage on flights, discounted scuba lessons, discounted parachute lessons, etc.

Im just tryna get all the info I can, so If I wanted to learn more about my job or become more advanced at it how would it work? Talk to the carrer officer and they give you lessons etc? Im in the dark here
