There are about 20 blocks of 'open camping' where you don't need to be with a camp. But you need to bring EVERYTHING with you, including drugs. I've been going since 2004 and can count on 1 hand the number of times I've been asked or offered drugs by someone I didn't know off playa.

I've never been to the Bondage Dome (the main BDSM camp), but I hand at Spankey's quite a bit, which is a little more tame (but I've also eaten a complete stranger out on the bar, so not THAT tame)
