Hm. So what do you pilot?
Foreign ships that enter U.S. waters
Not that user but you do pilot boats.
You're like a captain or something? Or are you serious about making half a million driving a boat lol
First class pilots license issued by coast guard. Yes I'm serious. The average pay for a maritime pilot in the U.S. is about 400 to 450k.
As I said, I'm not that user.
Wow. What do you guys so?
When a foreign ship enters a U.S. port, a state designated pilot boards the ship and serves as local knowledge for the ship. We take the conn(term for who is giving the commands to the helsman) and bring the ship into the port. The captain of the ship is still ultimately in charge but we get the ship to it's berth or anchorage
Ah makes sense why the high pay. You guys ever deal with crazy situations or what?

99% of the time, no. It's the 1% where we earn our pay. Nothing like piloting a 900 foot loaded tanker in the fog in a 500 foot wide channel with a 5 knot current. Balls in your throat scary

Haha yeah I bet. Looked here online. Seems like it's a range of pay but I'm guessing you need a load of experience to get to that level of piloting? By the way, what city are you guys in? The port in Los Angeles has some high paying g jobs like that too. But I heard the wait list is like endless.

Worth noting that it's net, not gross.
I'm in the southern U.S. Not going to get too specific. Yea experience varies. Most require a 4 year degree from one of the 6 state maritime academies, an unlimited officers license which varies by level, and x amount of experience at a certain level. I'd say the average is about 10 to 20 years from the start of college to become a full time pilot

CEO of Yea Forums
I make $14/hour
Sweet. I'm looking at some of the experience needed and it looks like it's exp on giant ships with leadership roles. You were on the water for some time I'm guessing? Were you in the Navy?
Yea experience varies, but you generally need an unlimited officers license whether it be a chief, master, etc. The only route to go now would be a state maritime academy and work your way up in a company to obtain the bigger licenses. Then you can start applying for jobs within specific ports. It's extremely selective because there aren't that many pilots. Some ports only have a handful like 5 or 6. Some of the bigger ports will have 100 or more
And holy shit the requirements are nuts. No wonder they have the openings lol
Yeah dude, pretty impressive stuff. Had no idea such a career existed.
Do you ever get tired of the water? My ass is stuck in an office all day working on firewalls, routers, and switches. Have to dress business. Lol I'm guessing you guys dress comfortably?
I wear slacks and a collared shirt. I don't get tired of it because the job changes every single day. I'm in a busy port so every day at work is different
Good stuff. Good stuff. Hey since you're always dealing with different stuff from different countries, you guys ever catch anyone smuggling stuff in?
I've never seen it myself(not exactly looking), but we've had armed security on ships because there were person's of interest on board
