Why do americans wear shoes when thay are inside their homes?? Ive always wondered this and it makes no sense to me

Sorry i dont have any better method to learn from you americans than those tv shows.

I do because I have small chilren and they are filthy.
So it's either wear shoes or vacuum 4 times a day.
I didn't wear shoes before them.
I also recently got a dog and until he learns to wipe his feet I'm going to wear my shoes.
I'm kind of a clean freak... or use to be... kids and animals change your habits.

Why don't Europeans ever wear shoes? I've seen several british tv shoes where they are just barefoot eating fish and french fries at a soccer game.

It's even weirder in Canada. Here we take our shoes off only in the evening as that's when we know we're not going outside anymore. Taking your shoes off at all in another person's home is seen as disrespectful, even if they take theirs off. You can never take your shoes off in a public place either, as it is also not good manners, unless it is the beach or something. We also all wear shower shoes when showering, as your bare feet would pick up the shower germs otherwise.

American culture depends largely on the location and the people who live there.
There are some overall American things but mostly the traditions come from the countries people came from.
Japanese americans may keep their shoe traditions for many generations into citizenship without realizing it is different for most other people.
So it is different for everyone and If you visit another persons house it is polite to ask if you should remove your shoes.
To some cultures in the US the shoes issue is seen in a similar fasion to the pouring wine and enlish tea.
If they fill your cup they expect you not to stay long.
If they say you don't need to remove your shoes it is an indication that you will be going outside or that you will not be staying long.
Again it is different for everyone and some households don't care and leave the choice up to the guest which can also be an indication of your intentions of whether you plan to stay long or not.
