I'm moving across the country alone tomorrow.
ama
Why?
I've lived in New York for 27 years and i find it toxic. I'm seeking a better quality of life.
congratulations! i wish i was in a situation to move across the country, or even to another country, cos i've done it before and it is properly exciting - especially if you don't know anyone!
so will the new place be a complete reboot for you, or do you have any relations there?
Where are you headed?
Unless you're going to Washington State, you're not really changing the atmosphere so much as the landscape.
Thank you very much! That was nice to hear. Many of my friends moved out there in the early 2000s. The rest of my friends are heading there in June. I've decided to get a head start and leave tomorrow. It will be a reboot for me, no doubt, but i will have close friends near by, which i'm grateful for.
New York to Colorado. I enjoy the space, and the environment as well.
I'velso lived in new york for 27 years (my whole life) and you're right. I wish you luck, and wish I could too
So half way across the country.
Disregarding that, what drew you Colorado?
>inb4 smoke weed erryday nigguh
Denver? Boulder?
Thanks, means a lot. In good faith, i believe the pieces will all fall together for us all.
It's exciting! NYC is the kind of place it's easy to never leave, if that's where you're talking about in NY
I don't smoke weed any more, i did in my teens and early twenties. Although the legalization is a plus if i ever decide to indulge in such, i'm heading there for the environment more so than anything. The landscapes and mountains, fresh air, and a smaller population. Just enough to have an active social life, with enough space to enjoy my privacy. I'm a simple dude, work hard, relax harder.
A few of my friends are in Boulder, a few in Denver, i rented a house Longmont, north of Boulder.
Like the generations before me, who have all lead successful lives here in New York, i've come to discover that material wealth and financial success doesn't always equate to a high quality of life. The opportunities i have here in New York, although fruitful, will not provide me with peace of mind. My health, all around, is more important to me than keeping up with the social expectations of New York. New York is a great place for the active and hedonistic, but i personally prefer a little more laid back lifestyle.
A reasonable kind of dude, I like that. Don't live in Colorado, but I wish you well on your new life.
>i rented a house Longmont, north of Boulder.
Fair enough. I'm in northern New Mexico, and I've visited Boulder a couple times. So I'm obviously sympathetic to what you're after, but I guess I would caution you to keep in mind, landscapes and thin air aren't a lifestyle. All these things quickly become ordinary, so I hope you have an actual life in mind--and not just city slicker ideals about living in the mountains.
Thank you very much
Haha, of course... i appreciate the word. I do have plans, short and long term as well as financial. 5 and 10 year goals that i'm confident i will forge into a reality.
Since this is your AMA (and since you got demonic numbers), what are your goals?
Initially, i'll be working for a Logistics company just until i get myself settle first year. I also intent to find a part-time job at a local cafe, for the experience and an additional income.
By year 5 i plan to be fully invested in the local real estate, ideally renting out to the college kids that will be recycling year after year. In addition to my investments, i will move away from my day job and focus more on event coordination and promotions. I was a tour manager and host in my early 20s, i'd like to get back into that.
By year 10, after building and settling into a house, i would like to open up a music venue as well as a cafe, and live out the rest of my year doing what i love. Traveling, hanging out with great musicians, and serving coffee and a home-grown all American cafe.
Please excuse my spelling mistakes, i swear i'm not retarded. I type fast, with poor accuracy, and post without reviewing what i type lol
You already have the logistics job? Past that, I don't know anything about the real estate situation around UC Boulder, but my understanding of renting to college students is that you have to expect everything to be destroyed constantly. But again I don't know much about the student population of UC Boulder.
Of course, common concerns, as will all property management, especially college kids. I will set up the interviews and the insurance accordingly. A friend of mine has had some recent success and suggests i would do better out there in the market. As for the logistics job, i have 3 interviews set up. If all fails, i have a friends business to fall back on, landscaping specifically.
Landscaping always sounds like a rough gig, but then I have pretty delicate hands.
You gonna move in one, coke-fueled binge, or are you gonna treat moving like a proper cross-country trip? And if so, where do you plan on stopping?
