Ownership and distribution rights vary from location to location though. I understand why it is confusing. Furthermore, as time goes by, these rights will change hands through sales and corporate deals. Different locations with the same state may have the same product being distributed by different companies. Dr. Pepper is a very confusing one for example. It's owned by Cadbury Schweppes, same people that own 7up, but is mostly distributed by Coke or Pepsi. Occasionally, it's handled by the local 7up company, and sometimes it's distributed by an independent bottler.

To give you a better understanding of what I mean, where I am, for decades, all coke was bottled and sold by a local independent company called "The Coca-Cola Bottling Company." They were not owned by Coca-Cola corporate in Atlanta however for most of their history. Eventually they were purchased by Coca-Cola proper, only to later be sold again to an entirely different company called Reyas.
