Has anyone ever gone to a therapist for depression/anxiety etc.?
I feel like I’ll ecentually work things out on my own but I’m wondering if it’s worth the time or money

I went to three but it was the last one that really helped. Here's what I suggest

-decide why you are going
-decide what your end result should be (come to terms with your sexuality, decrease anxiety, resolve family issues, etc...)
-decide when you want these issues resolved
-share these goals and timelines with your therapist
-both of you agree on goals and timelines
-work to accomplish those goals within the timeline

Remember that other issues may pop up. Discuss them, incorporate them into your goals and timelines.

The first two therapists I went to I was just billable hours to them. The third I used the above method and it really helped.

No. Read psychology books and watch videos on youtube. Fix your shit on your own and you'll be better for it. Therapists and psychologists can't fix anything. They're banking on your problem being that you're lonely and need someone to talk to to feel better. If that doesn't go the way they expect then they milk your wallet and send you to a psychiatrist (psychologist can't give meds) who's only goal is to get you put on meds for absolutely any fucking reason they can find.

In case I'm not being clear: Therapists/psychologists turn you into a constant revenue stream by making you feel like you need to keep talking tot hem every few days and Psychiatrists want you to be a constant revenue stream by having you become dependent on meds.

Expect to shop around. Most people are useless.

The cheap ones are always the best ones, no matter what it is, really.

Cut 25 mg diphenhydramine capsules into quarters and take one whenever you feel stressed. It's just enough to take the edge off but not make you sleepy. That helps with the anxiety.

If you get a good one they can be extremely helpful. You aren't wrong you could probably do it yourself, but think of it this way.
You could probably go to the gym and get yourself into body builder shape, but a personal trainer who actually knows the steps the science and will keep you accountable and personalise something that works for you every step of the way would be faster and way more effective.

Psychologists know the steps, they can help you pinpoint your issues, they can help design plans for your recovery and so on.

Anyway if you wanted to help yourself I'll tl;Dr depression and anxiety solutions for you.

Depression = lifestyle: Diet, exercise, social circles, job, how yoy spend your time, accomplishments, etc. If you're depressed, you're not fulfilled.

Anxiety = thinking: anxiety is a survival response. Your brain literally thinks something is coming to hurt you. (It's kind of dumb). It's a future oriented emotion. Handling anxiety is one part talking yourself through how little the emotion is actually helping you, because it doesn't do shit. (We aren't in the wild anymore), one part distraction, and one part finding the sources and resolving them. Behind on bills? Fix your finances. Unresolved conflict with friends? Work it out. Addiction? Beat it. So on and so on.
Important note, both depression and anxiety could possibly point to medical causes. Check in with a family doctor as well. For example hypothyroidism can cause both depression and anxiety. It can also kill you so, you know, yeah. Questions?

Keep that in mind when you're interviewing therapists to decide on which one to go to.
They can only help you deal with the symptoms, not cure you.

I got a therapist for free, almost. Paying minimum amount.
I went there on recommendation of my family who, after having had my 3rd breakdown and being suicidal for years, sent me there.

I mean it helped being able to seriously dump my perspective and talk about it with a trained individual who won't judge me for every little thing I say.

I've been there for a year now, I am no longer suicidal but I haven't changed much of my perspective.
And I don't believe that anything will ever change it, I'd still prefer not to be around anyone, or be around at all, atleast I don't feel the immediate urge to kill myself.

So it can help in some way it always depends on yourself.

I think much of the problem in American is the very fact people do think they can work through their own issues themselves.

To elaborate on your analogy. If you have never worked out a day in your life, and go and try to clean and press 135 you will likely hurt yourself.

So it makes sense to have a professional 'coach' you until you have the tools needed.

To often I see people thinking they can be their own coach and they are just making their life, and other worse off while causing real harm.

Also, think this is the issue with, talk with some friends. Your friend is likely a retard that will tell you what you want to hear. Not what you need to hear. Also they have no fucking clue what they are talking about.

Lastly if daddy Freud taught us anything, it's not only the act of awareness in overcoming whatever, that is reading a text book, but it is the physical process of talking with a therapist that is therapeutic.

I find it's pretty hit and miss when it comes to therapy. Too many therapists take the approach of "tell me about your feelings" and that really doesn't fucking work if you're not a touchy feely type.
I directly looked for a therapist that deals primarily with men, because the approach was different. Good dude. He ended up getting me into a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy course, which I found immensely helpful.

Don't get me wrong. I'm still depressed and have a lot of anxiety. It's impossible to be a thinking man and not be anxious and depressed in this fucking clown world we live in. I just deal with it a lot better.

If you don't like your first experience with a therapist, you probably won't eventually come to like them. Find one you can immediately open up to.

I'm probably not the best guy to speak out about this seeing as my first therapist tried to have sex with me (I was 16), but talking about it help. I'd suggest friends or people close to you. I know that it goes against the idea of talking to an outsider, but being open with the people close to you is amazing. If you've got someone who yo think you can be 100% open with (likely, it's just fear that keeps people from expressing themselves), you should try that. Also, it's free.

A couple of warnings:
Just about any idiot with can call themselves a 'therapist' after taking a couple of weekend seminars (sometimes less, varies by state). Be careful who you choose or you''ll end up just paying someone to talk to you.

Drugs with no counseling is just addiction. Counseling alone can work but it can also take a frustratingly long time.

Social media is bad for you. The more we study this the more obvious it becomes.

Good physical health is good for mental health, this has been well studied and well documented.

If you are under 26, and especially if you are in school or somewhere else where your peer group is almost exclusively persons very near to you in age, there is a very good chance your will grow out of your depression once you're in the 'real world' and have to deal with 'real world' problems.

Well...it depends... I needed to get some meds that would provide me some stable ground to be able to start working on myself. I ve been diagnised with OCD, anxiety and depression that caused often panic attacks. Now I m able to leaen more about my illness and work thing out.

Therapy and medicine really helped me

I tried to, two separate times/doctors. It felt like a waste of time where they just keep prodding me to talk. I can get that level of help from other drunks at the bar. It didn't help at all.

I know i'll get shit for this considering where we are, but I got much more actual advice and help that really worked from my pastor. You might think they'd just say to read the bible and pray, but he actually listened to my problems and went out of his way to get me back on the right path. I felt like he actually cared for my wellbeing, whereas with the psych I just felt like someone they weren't taking seriously and don't give a shit about me as long as my check clears.
