Seriously? I think all of my friends make at least $100k. I have a friend who just got an offer of around 600-700 from a quant fund, most of my friends at google/fb are getting $200-600k, my friends in more traditional finance roles are $200-700k.

Nope. I used to have a retarded standard. Many years a go I made $60k an thought that was great. Then I made over $100k and thought I couldn't do better. That was probably the biggest mistake, accepting that as a standard.

Once I let go of that standard and realized what I could be worth I started working harder, negotiating more aggressively, learning more about how total compensation at top companies actually works (hint: people making good money are still getting a relatively small base salary, rarely above $200k).

But it's fine, if you want to accept that $50/hour is good, then that will be your ceiling. I'm not telling you to feel bad about it, I'm just saying if you want to make a lot more, the first step is raising your standards for what your total comp should be.

I'm not trying to dish out advice that everyone can follow, I'm trying to give advice for any one rando out there who wants to really succeed. And all I'm saying is step 1, is to not look at the median if unless you want to be a median person. If you want more, then look a bit higher.

If you don't think you can be in the top in a group of 1000 people picked at random then I say try a bit harder.

99.9% isn't as hard as you think. For example there are 60 million people in the US that "run". Only about 200,000 of those people run a marathon. Finish a marathon in the top 30% and you're in the 99.9% of runners as far as endurance running goes. A big part of this is because most people don't get to the start line, let alone the finish. Is it easy to get in the top 30% of finishers for a marathon? No, but it's far from impossible. Top 3% may never happen, but you can definitely better endurance runner than 99.9% of people that even try to run (that's ignoring people sitting on the couch).

But it's really hard to get in the top 30% of finishers in a marathon if you look at say "yea but most people are just sitting on the couch all day, I ran a 5k once, that's pretty awesome, most people don't even do that!" Yea that's fine, running a 5k is great. Making $60k is great. But if you want to run a lot more than that and a lot faster, don't look behind you, look a head. Train like you want to get as close to the top of the London marathon as you can. And then right we you despair that you'll never get close to the people pushing 2 hours, realize that you pushed way beyond your limits, and that you're way past that 99.9% threshold.

Show me your pay stub with anything near 60 bucks a hour with a dick drawn in corner with smooth balls and ill agree with you and call you master .
