Right now he's playing the 'Greater Slava' game. He's trying to influence and draw ethnic slavs all together. That's half of Europe. Putin has to accomplish his goals before retiring. There's no other strongman in Russia at the moment to succeed him.

on a side note, I find it really strange that the hard right (Putin and his party) and the far left (Communist Party) don't go after each other's throats. In fact they often support one another. Putin has subdue pretty much the entire mainstream political spectrum in Russia.

That is partially because that opposition is either controlled or share the same goals in that regards (bringing back Russias power to levels of the soviet union), any real opposition that is against or even doesnt care for those goals live a dangerous life in Russia.

Russia and the USA are not allies. They are not friends. We were simply, and for a brief moment in history, fighting the same enemy. But do not be fooled: they are not on "our side," and never were.
