How can I be in your position by the time I'm your age?
What kind of work generally do you do?

Would appreciate the help.

Honestly man it’s mostly luck that I am where I am. I wish I had some real solid advice for you but I don’t. I don’t have any formal training or even any certain. I’ve just always had a knack for computers. I worked here as a basic office drone for several years before moving into IT then eventually was given full charge over the entire IT aspect of this company. It’s a small-medium company. About 100 employees, 157k square for facility with probably 75-100 devices on the network.

Probably 80% of my workday consists of just checking things to make sure they’re running smoothly. Back systems, network clients, wireless networks, etc. I also troubleshoot the small shit like “oh my printer is messed up” and such. The other 20% of the time is virtual server maintenance using Citrix xenserver and xencenter. On rare occasions it’s balls to the wall holy shit fix this NOW type stuff.

All in all I guess the only advice I have is to be willing to work hard and do the menial shit. I unfortunately have zero experience in “enterprise level” IT stuff.

I know none of that really helps much at all, but my job isn’t really the typical IT manager position. I’ll be happy to answer any more questions you may have though, if I can.

Oh and one more thing, I am WAY underpaid for my responsibility and position. Sucks ass but it is what it is.

Certain = certs btw

Square for = square ft

Back systems = backup systems

God damn autocorrect

If you’re studying IT, don’t go the neckbeard route. Study and learn about medical health systems, especially Epic.

I work as an Epic Analyst III (originally was an Epic CIS). I have minor IT background (no degree) and make about 140k USD a year.

If you study IT and do programming, the most you could hope for is 50k ish a year as a senior engineering. Kek. Gl.

there's more money in programming. if you go the IT/Sysadmin route you'll end up oncall 24/7, fixing printers, etc.
