is shedinja best played as a type of "support" role?
I just want to learn to use shedinja properly. In my eyes it's a sort of gimmick pokemon that's mostly useless outside of the (rare) situations where the opponent has no moves that can affect it, and these situations, though may be common, are hard to predict without literally knowing every opponent's entire moveset.
And it's not like Sturdy as a second ability is a thing in Emerald, I can't just hack it onto Shedinja.

I actually don't know much about competitive pokemon, or even the games in general. I haven't really been interested in the main series in years. That kind of grindy RPG just doesn't interest me anymore even though I'll pour time into games like Monster Hunter or Diablo.

I think your take on it being mostly a gimmick pokemon is correct. Doing things like hacking its ability onto Sableye to make an invincible pokemon (prior to Fairy type) is its most notable use. Most guides do tend to assume you know everything already which seems like a contradiction but them's the breaks. I can never remember the gyms either. I think the third one is Normal type?

Seems to lack some of the novelty of Shedinja. Having to care for it by shielding it from its vulnerabilities, having that spare slot and pokeball...
