Going to a gym is good, yes. Look up activities in your area, things that you find sort of interesting. Any kinds of activities or clubs that you could do. Also check the local newspaper, ask around. Find something you can do at least once a week, and try it out for at least a few months to have a good idea of it. It's important to go to something regularly, that is how you meet people. As for the flirting, it doesn't have to be sexual or crude, you can make slight references to kissing, or anything like that, or just compliment her on her hair/clothes. It is to show you are interested in being more than a friend.
