I think it attracts people with a victim complex and rotten, broken will, who glorify the crucifixion, and not the resurrection.
It's sad, but also their call.

I'll give it a shot, but let me start off by recommending some Eliphas Levi. This is him:
"His own disciples speedily misuse His name; pride enters the
sanctuary; those who should proclaim His resurrection seek to immortalize His death, that they may feed, like ravens, on His ever-renewing flesh."
It's easier to be loved than to love, and lots of insecure people (read: mostly everyone) are content to settle for that. They fear almost everything, cause they fear themselves, and so they have to fear change as well, and what they may become. This leaves them as little more than children, seeking validation at every turn, unable to become what they want, or are supposed to be, instead enshrining their faults. You can see this in fearful, but not real moral people: whatever deed they do that they deem good, they use as currency to spend doing shit they feel is wrong.
The whole issue can probably be explained by fear, and more importantly: lack of self love, and the broken will it engenders.
