Recently I figured out why I've been having so much trouble drawing things from my imagination. It turns out I wasn't thinking/visualizing my results before jumping right in. I'm a person who can draw anything I see in front of me literally perfectly, but that has almost nothing to do with creating art of my own. Like a fool, I relied on my hand just because I had a hand. Now, my practice consists solely of staring intently at art or objects, studying the way they are made or put together, without ever picking up a pencil. I tend to go overboard with neatness and craftsmanship when I draw, so setting down the pencil altogether has been very healthy practice for me. I never realized until now that you can draw entirely inside your head, even build objects out of simpler shapes, turning and twisting and stacking them any way you want. I think my perfectionism stunted my growth until now, as I use to reject the idea that anything I personally imagined could be good or look "right", while copying references allowed me to objectively gauge my skill. I've also learned that fabricating structures in your head takes WAY more effort than copying what you see, and your memory can even fade. But I'm really happy that I've "unlocked" the ability to draw from my imagination. So I thought I'd share this, since to me, this discovery was a lot like realizing I could think to myself!
Just like Wamuu from Jojo's who foolishly relied on his eyes because he could see, I had gotten used to seeing myself as hands and eyes instead of a mind.
