Well, I might have a job related insight on that. A) Your manner of communication is wrong. Even though she was quick to answer your question. She clearly asked an open question, giving you much space to talk pretty much anything. Your mistake was now to basically end that conversation with giving her the short answer and not asking any more questions or really giving her anything to go on by. Put yourself in her position, read your answer and see how easy it is to continue this conversation in a light manner. (without going into your childhood, wich might be a possibility but is a tad bit personal) Give her something she can engage in and talk about. B) She possibly isn't interested. Men often mistake common female signals they throw around for signs of interest. This is probably what happened.
Do absolutely nothing. Whatever it is you think you should do, just don't do it. This is counter intuitive but will work. After you've established rapport you can ask her out, do it in person and with clear intentions. Next time you see her should be good.
