thats not an aircraft thats a train

I think the rumors of old aircraft were more fun than the reality. Like the fact that this craft started development in the late 70's. Makes me wonder what they are working on right now that they will release 20 years from now.

f22 looks cooler so imma go with that

This thread makes me want to fly one day. Fuck the fear.

No, this is a normal, two-seat glider, especially suitable for training. Do the protruding parts on the wings irritate you? these are spoilers, every glider has them. In contrast to motor aircraft, they do not increase the buoyancy, but only provide more resistance.

^ This user knows whats up

Disaster for who? someone is making big money on that so surely it's a great project for that matter.

Riddle me this Batman:
Why will the US only sell the F35, not the F22 even to it's allies?

Yes, someone is making big money. We should put that on the gravestones.

because its broken

Flick a switch on the GPS system and UAV's are target pigeons. Tactical jamming? perfect ....

F-35, because it can just tell boats to shoot stuff.

military GPS is not the same you tool, jam all day they would still find your fat ass in the basement

'its'
It is what?

Because the F35 was designed to be something that could be sold rather than kept private.

Neither, F-14 master race.
Or F-15 ACTIVE.

"it" is the one you sell, the functional one you usually keep

Do I want air superiority, or a weapons platform that I can sell to everyone else?

Has anyone else heard an F35? That thing is LOUD

Yeah it's certainly louder than any western 4th gen fighter, but I found the f-22 to be a bit louder still, the f-35 made a real nice note but the f-22 felt more punchy and rocked your chest.

lightning is literally undetectable. in a pilot force that relies entirely on radar to detect threats, it is the unseeable killer. It also has vtol, which is cool.

Anyone that actually knows wtf they are talking about answers this question with..

F-22 has smaller radar cross section than the F-35. Raptor's cross section is the size of a ball bearing, Lighthing's the size of a marble.

дыpдыpдыp

Ball bearings and marbles vary in size you know...

The raptor, simple in design compared to some more modern designs

Hahahaha pseks gonna psek

How rich do you need to be to start flying?

some ball bearings are the size of marbles

22 for dogfight 35 for CAS

Shame they don't fly these anymore at airshows, last I heard the majority of them were being used for target practice but there's a few left that still fly

Not the same user but I'm also a glider pilot, it's not too bad. In Australia most clubs let you borrow their gliders for ~85 cents per minute and launch costs are $10-15 for a winch launch to 1800ft and aerotow is $50-70 for 2000-3000ft. Aerotow is expensive but you get more launch height and a higher chance of finding lift to keep you flying for up to hours.
Then I'm not sure about the rest of the world but in Australia almost all of the instructors just fly for fun and therefore offer to teach students for free (so long as the student pays for the aircraft hire), and the only thing they ask in return is usually some help with preparing the glider (washing, cleaning, etc).
The final cost is an annual fee of $85 which covers the cost of your insurance and GFA (glider pilot) membership, and some clubs charge an extra $50-75 for membership of their club.

The cost definitely adds up but I've put in over 250 hours so far over the past 5 years and I'm just 21 years old with a normal job.

Why do you think theres so many ufo sightings

Yes we understand your paycheck comes from stolen tax money based on inflated contracts, thanks for clearing that up

F-23 FTW

No doubt they have some cool stuff cookin'. All the cool stuff that we've got has been developed out at Area 51, like the SR-71 which was being developed in the late 50's and began flying in the early 60's iirc. Then they went on to the B-2 and the F-117, then the F-22/23. There's been rumors for a while that the successor of the SR-71 is being developed out there or one of the other "secret" bases. Wouldn't doubt that it's been flown already

The 22 every day and twice on Sunday. 35 is good and doesn't deserve the bad rap it gets from everyone, but the 22 will always be better. I flew the FA-18E for 5 years and was there when a 22 pancaked on the runway in Fallon. Broke my heart to see it there on the runway like a glorified bobsled

These are indeed awesome, I got to fight one and it was the most fun fight of my life. 22 still better though, sorry lol. I could find the Rafale at very long range

Damn right it is

I still remember the first time I saw it fly, the first time I saw it in person was out at Edwards AFB during one of their airshows. They had it parked and roped off and they never flew it then. But one of the next times I went out there they flew it. Was surprised how fucking loud it was, louder than the other jets that were flying that day like F-15's and F-16's. It's comparable to the big hoss B-1

sound-wise I mean

Attached: 3819589014.jpg (908x1586, 137K)

That's because we're actually exporting them, unlike the F22. The US wouldn't export it because they were worried it'd be reverse engineered. Unsurprising the export plane isn't quite as good. Despite the program's initial cost, the F-35 is cheaper on a "per unit" basis. It was so expensive to develop because it was designed to be easily retrofitted with new tech and they wanted to have as many common parts between the different types as possible to reduce costs of maintenance. The program might actually be cheaper in the long run given the logistical problems with supplying parts for several unique models at once and the future-proofing

Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure my buddy said the 35 has the single biggest engine made for a fighter. Granted, I'd rather have two engines and have 70,000 pounds of thrust like the Raptor, but I guess one real girthy engine is good too. I would just be so pissed off if I was flying around in that thing all King swing and dick like, and then one fat bird goes down my intake and the things dead

Based

Too bad they had to scrap them all top keep them out of Iranian hands

I hope so, cuz the navy's 35 RBA (ready basic aircraft, basically can it go safely fly) rate is abysmal right now. Thing is a maintenance nightmare

the lighting costs less than the raptor

Idk, I haven't looked at the numbers but I know both the program suffered the same problem, where the initial order number got trim down to a ghost of what it originally was, so the per-unit price went way up because the contract was basically cut in quarter. Feel like the last time I heard a number though the 35 was either close to or slightly more expensive than the Raptor, which is a fucking shame because if that's the case we should have just bought more Raptors. Thing is a God in the sky

All time favorite place right here, XF-84H Thunderscreech, the loudest plane ever built. The props would break the sound barrier causing 900 sonic booms a minute, even while sitting on the ground. "On the ground "run ups", the prototypes could reportedly be heard 25 miles (40 km) away". The exact same plane was parked outside my local airport for a trillion years but now it sits in a museum. It was traded with a shitass T-38

from when it was at the airport

Now

Attached: 1334008-large.jpg (1024x662, 293K)

Almost all military hardware has teething problems. Once the maintenance workers/pilots get used to them and they work out any kinks it should become much more efficient. Also this kind of program, with the future proofing and commonality of parts between fighters that can fill several roles is sort of unprecedented, at least to my knowledge. It can technically do more than any one model that has preceded it. It's like when people were claiming the V-22 Osprey was unsafe compared to helicopters or planes alone without realizing that it can do more than either of them alone could. If it's fitting a new combined role it's not exactly fair to compare it to machines that don't have it's versatility on a one-for-one basis
