use as many layers as you want. i tend to use one for sketch, one for line, some for colors/shading, and play with clipping groups too. it depends on what you need it for

Like the other user said, use as many as you want. For me, I typically use one for sketch, one for line work (or another for cleaner sketch). Then a shit ton for colors and shading... Last thing I drew used around 13? But I feel like I used too little there. I'd say I probably hover around 30 layers. Sometimes being minimal and using less than 5. If I'm painting, it can easily double or triple. But I tend to merge layers often, so then I lose some.
Just depends on you.

Had to put my cat down three weeks ago (long story). I've been debating getting a tattoo of him but I don't know how to draw for shit AND I don't know how it'd look. So here's my request: would it be possible to do an "outline" in black and white of him, using this picture as a reference? Even a tracing would be 100% fine with me. But, realistically, you should just go commission an artist if you care so much. Support an artist AND you'll get something quality.

Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram. Go through the commissions tag. Go ask/look around on /ic/ or /i/. Hell, we have artists here that are open for commissions. You just have to catch them when they're on.

But, DON'T get a tattoo of your actual cat. You should get it's name tattoo'd with a cross or some other memento mori symbolism. I know you loved him but getting a more modest tattoo is what you should do. No offense, but a tattoo of ANY cat is kinda bad imho. Unless you can include memento mori in it, imo.

If he just gets a stylized version of his cat, not realistic, he'll be fine. Speaking as a tattoo artist here. Yes, something like you said would be small and simple, but it just depends on how much user likes tattoos. If he doesn't have any? Then yes, I'd start small. He can always add more, even a picture of his cat, later on.
But if he has tattoo experience? Let him shoot for the moon. I'm covered in tatts, and let me tell you, once you have a few it's just kind of addicting to keep going.

Sorry to hear about your kittens and thanks for the advice. For years I've been back-and-forthing myself about tattoos. I like them if they're tasteful and I'd never get one in an area I couldn't cover like neck or face. I'd probably just do it on the upper arm like is typical. The problem is I've never known WHAT to get one of. Until now, I guess.

Never had a tattoo. It'd be small and an outline. Black and white, no color or anything. I don't know how much it'd cost or anything like that.

Look into pain charts to find locations. Some parts hurt like a bitch. And make sure you read up on tatt care cuz it's an ordeal until it fully heals.

I'd say around 50-60 USD would probably be fine. I don't know your exact specifications, and prices differ per artist, so I can't give you an accurate amount. Also, tip your artist at least a 10.
Sounds like a relatively simple tattoo, but I'd still ask or commission an artist for at least some concept poses and sketches. To see exactly what you want. Because a realistic silhouette won't look good or age well. You'll be best going for something stylized, even if it's simple and extremely low detailed.
Then you can even go buy some custom temporary tatts with whatever image you commission from artist. Try it out. See how you like it. That's usually what I suggest for my first timers.

But I might get a tattoo myself. My father passed away when I was young and he had an eagle on his chest and I'm thinking of getting an eagle on my chest in his memory. I heard that chest tatts are supposed to hurt a bunch. I'm assuming you have a chest tattoo? Like how much did it hurt when you got it, if at all.
I actually overexaggerated when I said I had no experience with tattoos. When I was a teen I tried to stick and poke a vigsvisir onto my arm (I really liked Björk and her tattoo looked cool imo)

No face tatts (dear god no), a couple simple hand tatts, and I've debated neck tatts, but I have yet to decide on anything there. It's not a no zone for me though. But I'd rather stay tasteful for those. Simple.

Honestly, it varies. It can hurt like a BITCH or it can not hurt at all. Pain charts generally give you a good grasp on pain levels, but some people just don't feel that much pain... But chest tattoos, especially large ones, do tend t hurt like a bitch more often than not. And yes, I do have chest tatts, but I happened to be lucky and have a pretty good pain tolerance.

Most tattoo artists, funny enough, tend to have been the weirdo teens that attempted their own tattoos. Still have mine on my ankle, the letter S for my father's name. Good times...

Post the request again tomorrow, but about 8 hours earlier from now. I'm usually on around that time. She's one of my favorites, albeit not my top, but she's up there. Maybe I'll do it someday.

This might sound a bit stupid, but my Freshman year Algebra teacher back in highschool planted the idea that getting a tattoo somewhere you can't easily cover is a bad idea. He said that in like Japan, the Yakuza and businessmen are all tatted up but you can't see them because they only get them where it can be covered up.

Call me a weeb, but I much prefer drawing manga and shit. A huge inspiration in my usual art is Hirohiko Araki. My art is like HEAVILY inspired by him. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has to be my favorite work of fiction of all time

Ha, actually, yes that's true. Yakuza nowadays DO avoid area's that are typically open to the public on the body. They still do to this day.
However, in Japan, they've been slowly becoming more lenient and accepting. There are still bathhouses that will turn you away for the smallest tatt, and there's the stupid fucking law that tattoo artists require a medical licence... But they ARE getting better. But yes,traditionally, tattoo's are the sign of yakuza in Japan. Best way to freak out some older Japanese people if you're bored. I know from experience.

Ha, same here. Being edgy, I went and broke some ballpoint pen for the ink like a dumbass. Then I just kept re-doing it when it'd fade. Eventually moved up to sharpie ink, but that's also around the time I met another tattoo artist that scolded me and got me along a better track.

Great tastes! I like manga too, but I just don't have a whole lot of time to read nowadays... I'd have to say Katsuhiro Otomo would be one of my biggest inspirations. Junji Ito as well... Some other artists to be sure (a LOT more), but those are the more well known of the bunch.

Trust me. Unless you're tatting another artist, the average person won't be able to actually notice the fuck ups. And yes, they do have that temporary tattoo to draw over! Which especially means any mistakes will be minimal. Trust me, you won't be having any muscles spasms of the wrist. The tools really help you out and work well for the unsteady hand. Not like you have to do anything stupid complex to start either.
My goal is to one day be good enough to do watercolor tattoos. Those are a pain in the ass to do, but fuck are they pretty.

Oh, but it's not like traditional yakuza didn't avoid these open spots too though. They were pretty smart most of the time, but grunts typically didn't care too much.

And, especially in the modern era, there are PLENTY of ways to hide your tattoos. I've snuck into a couple of bathhouses for the fun of it, but I have some pretty big tatts, so I don't do it often. A bit of a pain to do.
