I'd argue that white women are almost exclusively interested in Indian culture in a very superficial fashionable kind of way. I don't mean that negatively, it's a pretty harmless thing. But everything that western women like about India is the surface level stuff that fits effortlessly into western civilization. They have no interest in living under a strict caste system or reject the use of toilets, they don't want to live "as an Indian", they just like some of the culture's accessories. The clothing is very visually distinct and interesting, and can be blended with other culture's fashion for great effect. The vegetarian heavy diet and cuisine has appeal to anyone who's focused on staying slender and living a low-intensity/low-exertion but still generally healthy life. Yoga is an approachable relaxing way to exercise. Buddhism has a lot of easily digestible concepts that you can live by an believe in without having to get too entrenched in the religion. It's very much a 'costume' of a culture to anyone not born in it.
As for why white women don't really like Indian men, it's not complicated. Indian men are lacking in a lot of what women find appealing in the opposite sex, in the same way black women kind of struggle on the dating scene. Indian guys are fighting an uphill battle to look and act they way the western women find enticing.
The smell doesn't help.

Everyone is an individual obviously, no one perfectly fits the mold of their stereotypes, but there are general trends you can find among groups of people. Black guys tend to be pushy and full of bravado, but they make up for it by actually sticking to what they feel and not making excuses for it. Asian guys are the opposite (in a good way) in that they're usually very respectful and patient, but aren't dishonest about their intentions, just not 'bullish' about it. White guys are the medium setting between the two.
Indian guys alternate between bragging that all they want is sex and apologizing for wanting sex, and it just comes across as super weird.
