It starts out as a joke when you're younger and mocking old people, but becomes unironic when you become the old

when you are young, you might think older people are lame or out of touch. but when you get older, you know that the young are senseless, mindless, horny idiots with no sense of self, identity, or real world knowledge.

when you get to that point, saying you are old is somewhat of a self assurance. its like providing a reliable source to whatever shit you are bringing into the debate against a dumb younger person.
