Tilapia is the lowest profit yield of fish. Focus on goldfish and pet fish breeds. But I'm not an expert when it comes to that. It's a very very difficult and expensive field to work in, with low profits.

Why tilapia over something far more profitable like chickens, ducks, or even pigs? You can sell what you don't eat. Fish are so hard to care for, and fucking expensive as hell. Cheaper to buy tilapia at the store. Do some research on the sheer costs associated. I know because I was thinking about that when I was younger, then I said fuck it.
Just going the chicken route myself probably, or turkeys. Whatever I can get organic certified. Oh, and lots of weed. Tons and tons of weed if possible. Earthworms, rabbits, chickens. All kinds of stuff at the same time.

You need to pay to get the nutrition facts added for any product as well.
Tilapia just isn't very profitable unless you are doing a massive $200,000 setup. Just grow weed like everyone else under 25 these days. You can grow 6 large plants legally out in the open in many states. Average yield about 1 pound per plant.
6 pounds at national cost = $28,000

I'm definitely going to be starting with some more traditional livestock, a small group of sheep and a couple goats are necessary for the crop rotation system I want to apply, or at least the cheapest option available
aquaponics experiments will be after I have things settled in a bit, preferably with some revenue
tilapia is what comes to mind right now because its a common inclusion in my diet, but I would of course investigate other more profitable or palatable options
water management with some reservoirs/cisterns is a key part of the long term development plan in most areas I've looked at, may as well try and throw some fish in there

It's just not profitable. I would steer you away from that if I could. Unless you have hundreds of thousands of dollar lying around, the sheer scale wouldn't yield much in profit. You'd be doing a year of work for maybe $2,000 after all expenses. And they are high for fish.
I'm telling you man. Weed, cooking herbs, chickens (especially if you can get them organic certified). The eggs will sell like crazy.
Leave fish farming to the giant corporations, especially a common low profit item like tilapia. Try to secure the organic hipster crowd with pasture raised chickens. The big corps focus on mass production, so you don't need to compete with their setup.
And I said it once, but I'll say it again. You CANNOT apply organic label to fish, no matter how safely they are grown. It doesn't apply legally. Only plants and meat. It's a waste of time. Organic is the money, along with cannabis.
Also, anything related to fish farming will pollute the surrounding area, not make it better environmentally. Fish poop... A lot. And they eat.. a lot. And what you're feeding them most likely will have pesticides in it. The scale you will need will negatively affect the environment.

Natural is not a regulated term, so you can use that. Or healthy. Or "all-natural" lol, even if you load with antibiotics. Which you will need a lot of if you get fish. They get sick like crazy, and it spreads like wildfire.
Organic certification is a money machine, so they need to protect their label.

A well balanced aquaponics system cycles the waste from the fish through a bacterial colony where it is fixed into suitable fertilizer for plants, works well on the scale setups I've done, I'd like to at least tinker with something bigger for fun if nothing else
most of the ideas I'm looking at are not intended as scale-able profit making enterprises, rather they focus on sustainability, producing a diverse array of foods for a local family or community group. The agricultural aspects are not intended to provide a great deal of cash income, at least at first, most of that comes from the government and corporations through subsidized loans and carbon credits. The long term money makers are fruit and nut crops mainly.

Nut crops aren't a great idea. They generally take years to mature the first yield, which is why they are so expensive. Some take as long as 12 years. Focus on basil instead, or other cooking herbs. Organic certification is necessary to make even a little money.
Your fish project will only bleed money. I don't recommend it. Focus that energy on weed instead. In a 100% legal state. Path of least resistance, and don't grow more than allowed. No risk required to make money with cannabis during this time.
I had that idea too. Fish actually makes terrible fertilizer for many of the more profitable plants. Chicken feces is far more useful, and chickens lay eggs and yield meat which can be organic certified, and is far more profitable.

Also, like I said fish farms always pollute a surrounding area, even if you grow in plastic vats (which are expensive as fuck). You will not create an ecosystem. You'll be fighting off crows and other natural predators as they tear your fish apart and shit all over the water.
