My question is do you find it was to switch off when you get home? I know you're not supposed to but do you ever talk to friends and family about inmates?

That depends on the inmate, me personally. I never fucked with anyone unless they started to fuck with me. I was of the type to call someone out and see if they had the balls to fight rather then cuff them up and beat'em.
Now property, it depends on what it was and if they were aloud to have it or not. Regardless you aren't supposed to "destroy" or "throw away" anything. It has to be bagged and taken to property as contraband. So I've confiscated stuff, but never destroyed it.

Well the main way is by crooked guards and visitation their family members bringing stuff in and sneaking it to them.
At the prison I worked at, one day the prison went on lockdown because a car drove up to the side of the prison and tried throwing a bag of cell phones and drugs over. The bag got caught on the razor wire and a guard in the tower saw the whole thing.

I went out on the floor to count.
The housing was an open bay unit(meaning no cells).
I walked through the bathroom to make sure nobody was in there, and I could here the sound of a furious pounding.
Honestly, at first I though it was fist hitting a face.
I popped my gas, and ran over behind the showers.
It was this old black dude pounding some really young black kid.
They immediately started saying "SSHHHH DON'T SAY NOTHIN DON'T SAY NOTHIN"
my gas was already popped so I sprayed both of them.
I wrote them up for fighting.

I've served a total of 12 years between Georgia and Ohio (actually in a halfway house right now), big difference between prisons between the north and the south.

If you want to stay in that line of work, advancement is easy and plentiful.
There are plenty of places to move up to, and it's easy to do.
Just don't do anything crazy, and don't bring stuff in for the inmates.

The best part if when he was getting shipped I made sure, to walk him through the middle of the wing so everyone could see him(I had already outed him as a pedo).
