I believe he was suffering from shortness of breath and though he was continually being short-changed by the authorities, who gave his complaint short shrift because of the short temper he demonstrated when dealing with their short-handed customer services team. I also believe he had significant money worries having been advised to go short on some stocks that then rose in value to unprecedented heights, leaving him short of cash and mentally a few sandwiches short of the full picnic.
Still, it was a shame to see someone's life cut short.
