Op here. I actually initially liked Caroline but you can't marry her. I heard Leah is the chillest once she's actually your wife but I wouldn't know. I'm new to the game and I'm not married yet. I got penny at 8 hearts but after awhile the savior complex wore off and I got Emily at 7 hearts. I got a bouquet waiting for her but it ain't there yet.

Abigail comes with a minigame. Leah seems to produce a lot of coffee which is cool, useful stuff. I don't think there's a lot of difference though.
I found marriage kind of whitewashed the characters in general and made em all generic and boring after the fact. Metaphor maybe?

Coffee is so easy to make though All you need are a couple plants in your green house and you have enough to make as much as you need forever. I mean I guess if you're one of those people that wants to use every plot for super valuable crops then it's a nice perk to get it for free but realistically, you don't need to do that. That's really my only criticism of that game. Too easy to get rich and then at some point you have nothing to spend money on. I kinda wish they'd put some sort of annual money sink into the game like taxes based on how developed your land is maybe..I dunno, SOMETHING. Once you get a green house full of ancient fruit you've basically beaten the game.

Each npc has their own likes and dislikes, with some 'universal' likes, dislikes, and loves. If you want to do it 'legit' then it takes a lot of patience and attention to learn what everyone likes or doesn't. Alternatively you can look up on the wiki or get the mod to look up anything in-game.

I mostly just want the most practical wife. A teacher seems like a very practical mother in a small rural town. But I haven't actually gotten to a point in the game where I'm stable enough to pursue grills yet. Am I wrong about my assessment, or is Penny the correct choice for pragmatism?

I gotta recommend the wiki. I wouldn't recommend using it for every little thing but here and there it's a valuable took for enjoying the game. You can kill the fun with the wiki tho so be careful.
