I really wish I could say it was better, but it's awful

I enjoy all the luxuries available to me. I miss my friends after we all moved away from home to pursue careers. I worry that human progress might be stalling more than it could because people have it so good now that there is less incentive to improve versus enjoy a hedonistic life style. I love to learn everything I can, and want to improve the world with solar arrays, grid-level energy storage, energy management AI, and automated food cultivation/production systems so everyone is alleviated from needing to work so we can figure out what the fuck we want to do with our free time. I'm sad I won't get to see the end results even after my engineering career is over.

I travel quite a bit to the developing world for work (all over LatAm and SE Asia), and I’m convinced that lower middle class people in rural Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Colombia, Costa Rica et al. are the happiest people in the world. I’m not talking about people living in crushing poverty. I’m talking about a family living in rural Thailand or Malaysian Borneo, with a humble, three bedroom, single-story concrete house with a tin roof, plumbing and electricity. Maybe they’ve got a flatscreen TV and a couple of off-brand Chinese smartphones in the house, an old motorbike, maybe a piece of shit mitsubishi pickup of some sort. They can afford their kids’ school fees and uniforms. They’ve got enough money for groceries and bills, though certainly not enough to travel anywhere, or to eat out often. They have strong family units and community ties, they eat fresh, simple, local produce (fish from the sea in front of their homes, fruits and vegetables from their own backyards), they take naps in the afternoon in hammocks on the beach, they ride around on scooters and motorbikes with no helmet. Gangs of little kids do gainers off the local bridges into rivers, ride horses down the street, and paddle canoes over coral reefs with their buddies, all without parental supervision. Of course people get seriously injured here quite often. While it is depressing to see the extent of the ecological devastation in the global south, many of these people live surrounded by spectacular wildlife and landscapes. There is an element of danger in many of these places that keeps people on their toes. Potentially dangerous animals lurk in the jungles and under the waves. You are, in a sense, much more a part of the circle of life and the food chain here. There is something primal, and more exciting about life.
