What are we doing about it. Protests? Hacktivism? The free spread of information should be encouraged, and an assault on justice anywhere is a threat to freedom everywhere. He's definitely getting extradited, charged, and getting max sentence. What can be done?

Whistleblowers should be protected and their speech encouraged, not stifled and silenced. US has their pants down on letting gov't documents leak, but they had no business spying on the people (snowden) or torturing Iraqis (Assange) in the first place. If the US wants him, they're going to get him no doubt about it. The question really is not if he will be extradited, it's what will the honest truth and justice loving populace do when he is put into kangaroo court, found guilty and left to rot in jail (or assassinated)
First, he SHOULD be tried for the sexual assault & rape allegations (that were made in Sweden, seven years ago, or whatever).
Then, MAYBE extradited to the USA to be tried for whatever his involvement in the unauthorised access and theft of legitimate state secrets.
This (alleged) criminal has attempted to make himself above and beyond the the reach of justice for far too long and I hope he now gets the full force of those legal powers, with no undue leniency.
