Real American here. I can tell you without a doubt, there are people that wear shoes in their home, and go barefoot outside. But they're never the same person. You're either one or the other. Typically you have your people that wear shoes when appropriate. But you also have people that never wear shoes (or just wear flip flops), and people that always wear shoes, often Converse or Doc Martins. It's true, America has all sorts of people
