Some alternative treatments actually work. They're by far in the minority because for the most part the reason they're "alternative" is because they haven't been proven to work in properly run studies. Some things only work in very specific cases. Maybe only a very small and hard to identify portion of the population is even sensitive to the effects. That would make the treatment great for those who are, but virtually useless as a mainstream treatment. Then of course the placebo effect is a powerful thing, so you'll get people who honestly believe even the most ineffective ones worked.

Then you have a lot of people who have run out of legitimate treatments and are desperate. They're willing to try anything and there are plenty of people predatory enough to get rich off of that desperation.

Also, there are those who don't trust any big companies. They take any evidence of a shady practice as proof that absolutely everything the entire industry claims is a lie. They believe modern drugs are intentionally only treating symptoms instead of curing the disease like they think is possible. As a corollary, they believe that anything a medical professional says about the ineffectiveness of alternative medicine is pretty much proof that it does work. If you're selective enough you can point out things like how tribe x uses this herb to treat everything, and there's a member of that tribe that's 120 years old! They simply ignore things like how only half of all adults even reach 40 because of disease, how their entire lifestyle is utterly different and impossible to equate to our own, and as skeptical as many claim to be they don't even for a moment doubt the claim of the 120 years age.
