I'd say by now, the answer can be known for sure to be one
(for any newcomers, Parenthesis first, multiply 3*2, 6/6=1)

First the brackets, then left to right. 9 is the only right solution

sqrt(2)

>had it right before
Is it because of the whole left to right rule? Or are you just a SADMEPfag?

Wrong. Division and multiplication are equal in the order of operations, as are addition and subtraction for that matter. You do whichever one appears first in the equation from left to right first. In other words, the answer is 9.

pemdas you asshat

why are people saying 1 am i retarded?

>if you didn't have an iphone at the age of 10 you're a loser lol

Satan has spoken, the answer is one.

Attached: Untitled.png (1920x2168, 324K)

No user, they are.

>Is it because of the whole left to right rule?
Correct.
Time to get snipped, Satan.
Pass.

Yes, PEMDAS, illiterate crack whore nigger baby. See

Why in God's name does everyone have to get confused on what should be the most simplistic aspect of math? Why can't it just be one "set in stone" method instead of it changing for people?

first is 1+2, then because there's no symbol in between the parentheses it means it's multiplication so 2x3, then you divide 6/6 and get one. who taught you how to do math?

The answer is both 9 and 1, it just depends on how much power you want to give to either the left to right rule or the PEMDAS rule.

aren't you supposed to multiply then divide?

No, wait that was the wrong explanation. What I meant to say is that multiplication obviously goes before division. They are not equal in nature, and if they were, by your logic, the answer would be 9 and 1.

PEMDAS and left to right are not mutually exclusive. Left to right works within PEMDAS. Multiplication and division are equal, so you do whichever appears first. Same with addition and subtraction. It might as well be spelled PEDMSA.

>They are not equal in nature
Find a mathematics professor who will sign off on this statement. Division is multiplication by the reciprocal and subtraction is addition of the negative, so these operations are equivalent.

yes because multiplication takes precedence over division just like addition takes precedence over subtraction. but if there's parentheses involved, then the equation inside either the brackets or parentheses takes precedence over whatever is outside of them.

>6 ÷ 3 (3 x 9) + 2 - 1
should be solved like 3 x 9 = 27 x 3 = 81 ÷ 6 = 13.5 + 2 - 1 = 14.5

I will say, I've learned a bit about the intricacy of PEMDAS, though I fail to see how the left to right rule can contribute to the accuracy of actually solving the problem, as it can be just as easily assumed that this rule did not exist and yet you could get a completely different answer. The left and right rule seems to be too much of a simplistic solution to the complex problem of the PEMDAS order. Though it does reconcile the issue, it doesn't seem to be very accurate in nature.

>6 ÷ 3 (3 x 9) + 2 - 1

Actually, it's
6 ÷ 3 (3 x 9) + 2 - 1
6 ÷ 3 (27) + 2 - 1
2 (27) + 2 - 1
54 + 2 - 1
56 - 1
55

Proof
wolframalpha.com/input/?i=6 ÷ 3 (3 x 9) + 2 - 1

the parentheses is another symbol of multiplication if there's no other symbols in between, just like × and * are used sometimes for it and / and the fraction bar (can't get it on mobile so bear w/ me) are used for division

again you multiply first since it has precedence over division just like addition takes precedence over subtraction, so it's 14.5

7

you are all wrong
>6
>/thread/

Attached: 2019-04-10 00_04_42-Window.png (796x362, 14K)

The answer according to modern mathematics should be 9.
Solved as such.

6/2(1+2). Add the numbers in the brackets.

6/2(3). Because you are left with a multiplication and a division only, the left to right rule takes effect.
Which leaves you with
3(3)
And finally
9 as your answer.

*Historically though, from textbooks in the early 1900’s, they were taught that when there is a division symbol, you divide everything on the left of it, by everything on the right, so you would in fact be left with
6/6=1
This is outdated and is no longer taught, nor used in modern mathematics.

I hope this clears things up for everyone.

1

closes right answer in this thread

if you had 1 - 2 instead of 2 - 1, you'd still do the addition first and that goes for multiplication as well

That's wrong, the answer is 1

cut the shit, OP. 1 is the answer.

This shit is just poorly written

>fucked up
>stil right
wolframalpha.com/input/?i=6 ÷ 3 (1+2)

so what you're essentially saying is that someone decided to change how math equations operate for shits and giggles and now it's the the preferred method? foh I'm doing it the way it was taught to me and how it's been done in history

the precedence is left to right, not what you said

Not sure if trolling. You entered the equation incorrectly by multiplying 1 and 2 instead of adding them. The answer is in fact 9. It's nice that you are one of the few people smart enough to check the answer with a calculator, though.

>you multiply first since it has precedence over division
>addition takes precedence over subtraction
Both of these statements are wrong. Division is multiplication by the reciprocal and subtraction is addition of the negative. In either case, the operations are equivalent and you do whichever appears first in the equation from left to right.

chill keyboard warrior. Why dont you try the mystic art of cntrl+alt+del today.

still 6. am I retarded for putting my food in the oven too insted of making a bonfire to warm my food? not using tools for increased accuracy and speed is retarded

I was wrong, my fx-82ES says the answer is 9

Can anyone explain why division goes before multiplication in this case?

Haven't done maths for years

Jesus mate.
Im a lowly 89iq and even i know those components are equal in value.
This is why the left-to-right rule is required.

enter into excel and see what you get

isn't it 1 where are you guys getting 6 and 9

6/2(1+2)=
6/2(3)
6/6
1

The answer is 1.

wrong. subtraction is to addition as division is to multiplication

Holy shit this must be bait.

>wolframalpha.com/input/?i=6 ÷ 3 (1+2)
You entered it wrong a second time. This time you put a 3 where there should have been a two.

This is the correct answer
wolframalpha.com/input/?i=6 ÷ 2 (1+2)

>not using tools for increased accuracy and speed is retarded
I agree with this, actually. I wasn't mocking you for using a calculator. It's good to check your work. At least you're trying to figure out the answer rather than telling yourself you're a genius for doing it wrong and ignoring what an actual calculator says.

If u don't know BODMAS kill your self

>subtraction is to addition as division is to multiplication
Correct. Subtraction is equal to addition in the order of operations, just as division is equal to multiplication.

>wrong
Not sure how you can agree with me but still manage to say "wrong."

whenever we had math test in school and equations like these the teachers always said to not use the whole equation in the calculator because they used the left to right method and it's incorrect. to say that what my teachers and textbooks said was wrong is something I'm not willing to say

No need for explanation, I got i wrong when I used pen and paper.

The only right answer

how you misread that is beyond me but w/e.

Been stewing on this for about an hour. Thought the same just before.

pic related
if you just put the left part on the right part the answer is 1
there are actually 2 answers, 9 and 1, it just depends on the way you want to read it
the problem comes from the fact that we write equations like we write sentences, we would need a better system to solve things easier

Attached: 2019-04-10_002038.png (810x339, 17K)

>Can anyone explain why division goes before multiplication in this case?
See Division goes before multiplication here because it appears first in the equation, which is deliberately phrased to be confusing. Nonetheless, the answer is 9, as explains.

Kek way to go OP. Go get yourself a vasectomy you dumb fag, it’s 1

6/2(1+2)=
3x3=9

2/6 is not equivalent to 6/2

>there are actually 2 answers, 9 and 1, it just depends on the way you want to read it
Yes, that's one way of looking at it. There's the correct way, from left to right, and then there's the other way.

Prove it. Show your work.

No, not at all.
And you must be fairly old then because it was adapted to the modern usage sometime after the First World War. So unless you are the oldest person on the planet, I would imagine you are not remembering your math classes very clearly.

The only thing that was changed was the way a division symbol would be expressed when using the order of operations.

6/2(1+2) written the way it is was expressed as 6 / 2x3 or 6/6
But that is not how the order of operations work.
Because multiplication and division are of equal importance in the order of operations, you proceed left to right after the brackets.
As such
6/2(1+2)
6/2(3)
3(3)
=9

It would need to be written as
6/(2(1+2)) for it to equal 1

why wouldn't it be right to read it from right to left ? it's just a choice people have made it seems.
either way it's just poorly writen, it's mathematics not litterature

It's 9.

LOOK MANE
in school (and I was in science field) we were taught to multiply the insides of the brackets first
are you saying all my professors who did years of math studies are wrong ?

You can’t even type it in wolframalpha properly you dumb fuck, it’s: 6 ÷ (3*(3*9)) + 2 - 1

division and multiplication have the same order of operations so you do it left to right after the parenthesizes. thats why people say bedmas or pemdas so the answer is 9

ITT fucking morons on both sides

No, but the 2 is not inside the brackets. Therefore it does not come into play when you are solving the math for inside the brackets.

You do the math inside of the brackets first, then you proceed left to right with the rest of the equation.

You are solving it as if it was written like this 6/(2(1+2))
In which case you would be right: the answer would in fact be one because after solving everything INSIDE of the brackets, you would be left with 6/6, and an answer of 1.

No, it isn't. You just created a separate equation by adding in that second parentheses, which represents a separate multiplication of variables.

I've been to charter and prestigious Catholic schools and every single math class I had explained in great detail on multiple occasions that multiplication and addition always go before division and subtraction in equations regardless of position and I'm only 23

>Catholic schools
kek

>division is multiplication
So why is multiplication associative and division not then?

i understand
but the equation is just poorly written, it should be written like this : (6/2) (1+2)
so that we solve everything inside the brackets easily and multiply 3 by 3

9... e z p z

Hey moron, look at your fucking uploaded image you dumbass. Your picture says: 6/(2(1+2)). Do you even know what fractures are?

its not poorly written, multiplication and division have the same precedence so you solve it from left to right. adding parenthesizes changes the equation

It sounds like your teachers at these "prestigious Catholic schools" were complete brainlets.

you wouldn't do 9 divided by 3 to the second power the way thes morons are doing OPs equation to get 9, it's just fucking dumb

leftists are not only ruining history for our youth but also math lol they can't do basic math jajaja... if you have 1 =2 it's three
If you have one candy bar and add two more how many do you have

1+2*

Because division is a type of multiplication that is not associative. 1/5 is .2 and 5/1 is 5. What's hard to understand?

actually the second equation would be 1.
the / implies a fraction, everything after the / being on the bottom of the fractal equation and everything before being on top. the first equation is 9

PEMDAS you fucking retards.

Okay. So first of all, if multiplication and addition come before addition and subtraction, you are telling me that if I was to solve, let’s say,
5/2(3+5)x5, I would
End up with an answer of I don’t know, 16, if I am doing your version of “math”, as opposed to the correct answer of 100

Why would there be a rule of left to right in the world of fucking mathematics which has inherently no need for directions because it is the base of everything ?
stupid rules for stupid representations I guess

9

And using the infallible PEMDAS, you came up with what number as a solution?

Attached: 1476989084749.jpg (311x311, 24K)

3 + 5, then 2 × 8, then 16 × 5 so yes

>Hey moron, look at your fucking uploaded image you dumbass. Your picture says: 6/(2(1+2))
The picture in the OP says 6/2 (1+2).

What kind of math are they teaching in those catholic schools? Because that’s ridiculous.

1

Actually, it's

5/2(3+5)x5
5/2(8)x5
2.5(8)x5
2.5(40)
100

And if we did it the way you think it is supposed to be done, it still wouldn't be 80, which is 16(5), because you don't get that as the final result. Even if you divide after you multiply, you still have that 5 to deal with.

Your version is
5/2(3+5)x5
5/2(8)x5
5/16x5
5/80
0.0625

This is obviously wrong, btw.

This guy gets it

Prepare to get sterilized, goyim. One little snip and you'll barely feel a thing.

Yea Forumsoomers, how is this solved in the shit new way of math you have to do? The answer is nine, but show me how you get the answer doing nigger math

Boomers are oldfags, dumbshit.

Zoomers are newfags and thus should be the ones accused of doing math "the new way."

Yes, I realize that is what you were trying to do. But you failed, since you used Yea Forumsoomer instead of zoomer. There are tons of people on Yea Forums from generation Y, i.e. geriatric old fucks in their 20s and 30s.

You also said people are doing it wrong because they're doing it "the new way" when in fact, PEMDAS is considered the new way. The old way, just from left to right, hasn't been used in a hundred years.

>You are a retarded
No u.

This is you.

I mean, it's 1.
The thing is tho, it's pretty stupid to write out the equation like this.
The only reason i think it's 1, and not 4 (depending on if you choose to divide or multiply first) is because I imagine something like pic related

It's 9, silly goy.

I mean I get how you get 9 but I have learnt to treat it as a fraction when we see /.

Idk goy
You have teached me like this for a decade.
If / was : then it would be 9.

youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=URcUvFIUIhQ

It's literally designed and presented this way on purpose to bait and confuse people. That's the only explanation for it.

6/2+4
6/6
1
You learn this in grade nine. holy shit.

a division symbol always creates a numerator and a denominator in math. that is literally its purpose.

the answer is 1, not 9. if you say it's 9, you clearly haven't explored math beyond high school.

As you can see, based upon interpretation, there are two answers, the modern one being 9, and the older rules being used later in the video indicate the answer to be 1.

Why is it that calculators get the correct answer, 9, and you cannot despite "exploring math beyond high school?"

Not possible to solve. It's impossible for division, multiplication and addition to occur in one equation. You need multiple equations for that.

because you are too retarded to use brackets on your calculator

Wrong, brainlet. You are doing it out of order.

The reason why people default to "left to right rule" is because you can easily convert subtractions to sums (e.g. 1 - 1 is the same as 1 + (-1)), and divisions to multiplications (e.g. 4 / 2 is the same as 4 * (1/2).)

So you entirely eliminate divisions and subtractions and replace them by their equal multiplication or sum.

So the OP's equation is actually equal to :

6 * (1/2) * (1+2)
6 * (1/2) * 3
3 * 3
9

Get it now?

its 9. remember pemdas you stupid niggers?

The reason so many people fail at basic maths is because they learn PEMDAS in like 4th grade and then forget to learn the rest of maths.

A division is an 'inverse' multiplication
A subtraction is an 'inverse' sum.

When you say 6 / 2, you're actually saying 6 * (1/2).
When you say 6 - 2, you're actually saying 6 + (-2).

They're the SAME THING. Hence there's no reason why you should do numbers out of order, instead of the way they are presented to you, as long as you respect that parentheses and exponents go first.

Then, as long as you convert everything to the same format ( divisions --> multiplications, and subtractions --> sums), you just go left to right.

It's that fucking simple, and I hope you all learn something today. But this is Yea Forums so it's just a waste of time really

>a division symbol always creates a numerator and a denominator in math. that is literally its purpose.

Yeah, you fucking retard. 3 / 2 creates
