2) Yeah, you pay into SS but the money isn't invested and thus, due to inflation, you never pay into it anywhere near as much as you get out of it. If you paid in $10 when $10 could buy a full tank of gas and an oil change, inflation causes that money to lose its value when you get that $10 back 50 years later.
