I hear that retail is hell because you're working with rude customers that like to verbally abuse employees and do things like shit in the aisles. I also hear most managers are assholes that blame employees for not getting work done while they themselves are lazy. How true is all of this?

Worked in Wal-Mart. The truth of it is that managers will push anything off on employees because most human beings are garbage that refuse to take responsibility. Also, some employees are lazy. Shit in the aisles? Never firsthand, friend told me he saw it in a K-Mart once though. Rude customers? I worked nights, and glad I did, so I barely met with them. Most just wanted to know which blender or toaster was the good one.
Nowadays I work in a casino, and I can tell you that you've likely got it better in retail if you can keep your head. At least in retail, you're there to get someone a product, instead of piss them off by taking their money. I wish I could go back, but I'd cut my income in half.
If you're real lucky, get yourself a job in inventory management, backroom shit. Learn how to use a forklift or electric jack. Still have to work your ass off, but no people.

Worried about starting that job at Walmart tomorrow? It's fucking cake, ease up. If you want to talk about a pressure job, try food service. You retail bitches can eat shit, you don't know hate at all.

It is what you make of it. People are more shitty to females, managers aren't generally dicks especially at first.. as time goes on they become shorter and shorter with you and expect more and more.. people dont shit in the aisles, though it wouldnt surprise me to find a kid shit on the floor... mainly people just ruin your zone and dont put shit back where it goes.

Like all jobs it is what you make of it. I worked retail for a long time. You have shit days and great days. Good managers and poor managers. You learn to take it all with a grain of salt. Associates (or whatever the lowest ranking position is) get the shaft the most, and have a huge quit rate.

It is to be expected. Most retail places pay $10-$15 an hour starting out (which isn't bad) but you also get no benefits and basically have to let customers fondle themselves them slap you with the same hand and thank them for the experience as you wish them a pleasant day.

So yeah.

I worked at a larger store for a while before getting my security guard license. I now work at the same store as a guard. I'm leaving soon for a much better job, but boy, is it different being on a different side of the aisle, so to speak.

Walmart/casino guy here, I will cop to this. I treat my food servers well, partially because I realize they're under even more pressure than me, and they can fuck with my food. The three months I spent at McDonalds can suck my balls.
Zoning, as it's called. Some of that stuff they do is annoying, but I've seen kids run through at 2:30 in the morning and just slap shit off the shelves, breaking stuff and honking bike horns. Not common, but you still want to see the little subhumans dragged into hell for their efforts.

It's not too plesant, but doable. I worked 10y in retail. Would not go back if asked, but would not die if i absolutely have to

I used to work in retail, now I'm in food service. Don't miss retail one bit.

Are you a cook or waiter? There's a vast difference.

As a dominos manager who runs lots of friday/saturday shifts, I completely agree. Food service is totally different from retail, performance matters more.

I'm a delivery driver.

i work in retail. what really sucks is trying to get credit card quotas filled. costumers here are way nice. managers are really nice too then again im more of a managers pet than anything

I've worked at Walmart for going on 9 years.
From what I've heard and understand, it really depends on the community and store.
My store and community is pretty good, so I've been fairly problem free the entire time.

And that's a third can of worms altogether. My little brother is one... he makes rate, tells me there are some "no delivery" houses and zones. I guess YMMV in that zone. I thought we were talking about working as a line cook, waitress, or in fast food.

one thing i forgot to add try and avoid women at work they can get reallly catty

Hah... our manager used to be a lunatic. But his store made bank and so they never canned him when he screamed at or harrassed an employee or customer. They just quietly shuffled him off to an anger management program a good half dozen times. Shit, he kept his job after threatening one customer with a shovel.
Not that I care, we actually got quarterly bonuses half of the time. He never gave me shit.

Worked seven years in retail and no,miss not too bad.

Customers will be customers, you have those who will be super chill and understanding and you have those who got nothing in their life and will yell and cuss at you for the slightest thing that you don't control.

Managers are usually nice, and if not you can not be a pussy and make reports to someone higher up. I had one bad manager in seven years and me and three others stood up and filed seperate complaints. He was replaced very quickly.

I mean it fucking blows but at least you can rest easy knowing you'll never see like 80% of the customers again.

At least, that's how I get through it.

One of my old store managers stole over 75 grand from our store.
Good times.

Here's my target horror story that made me quit.

>Applied for Target to be a cashier
>Got called almost 2 months later
>Store manager saw I had food experience and asked me to work in food court
>Start working in food court and it's pretty chill
>Come to find out that this department has been failing 3rd party health inspections
>These inspectors look every where, I saw a woman in a tight skirt and heels once get on her hands and knees to look for mold under a sink
>One day this LOD (leader on duty) asked me to report to guest first (we need cashiers in the front)
>Have health inspection in the morning
>Tell LOD I don't have time we have an inspection
>She points to a register
>Told her she needs to contact my department lead we can't fail another health inspection
>Tells me its not up for debate
>Have had this problem with this LOD multiple times
>LOD tells me either I cashier or I'll be sent home (either way I'll get in trouble)
>Tell her to her face that I don't like the way she is giving me an ultimatum and told her "I'm tired of your shit"
>She then makes me go to the store manager's office
>In a 1v1 conversation she talked down to me, told me I should be grateful to have this job, and that she could get me fired any day
>made me clock out
>had asset protection show me out of my own job just to embarrass me in front of the store

I was legit crying dude. This women made me feel like trash. I reported it to HR, they compensated me for my hours I lost and no punishment to her at all. Store manager then made me apologize to her for 'cussing' to her and she didn't even apologize back for how she treated me. I put my two weeks in and bounced that joint.

I worked for Target for 6 months, this was my nightmare story that made me quit.

>Applied to Target and ended up getting hired in the Food Court
>Learned very fast that the Food Court was failing their health inspections from a 3rd party inspector
>Our major offender was not letting the Pizza Hut pizza pans dry long enough and they would start growing mold
>The problem stemed from Target's guest first policy, which requires employee from other departments to report to a cash register when its busy
>There was one LOD (leader on duty/shift manager) lets call her Jane
>Jane and I had a few back and forths when it came to our previous health inspections and guests first
>my department head was aware of this
>One day Jane calls me to guest first the day before a health inspection
>I explained to Jane our situation and that we needed time to clean
>She just pointed to a register
>I told her that she needed to call our department
>She then told me you either cashier or go home, either way I was going to get introuble
>I stood my ground (Food Court would get shut down)
>She got mad and told me to report to the store managers office
>She wasn't there
>Jane walks in and asks me to sit and Jane sits in the store manager's chair
>Jane proceeds to be little me, tell me I should be grateful to have my job, that she could fire me at any time, etc.
>Her rant endsand she tells me to punch out and I was going home
>I punch out and start walking to the front of the store
>She stop me, pulls out her radio, and calls assest protection to escort me out to embarrass me and set an example to the whole store
>I'm practically in tears at this point
>The next day I go straight to HR
>All HR can do is give me the hours I lost from clocking out early and they admit she was in the wrong
>Store manager then immediately pulls us into a meeting
>Makes me apologize to the LOD
>She doesn't even apologize back
>And I get told if I do that again I will be fired
>Put in my two weeks right there

mb double post xD

How come you didn't cashier? I don't think it would be your fault if you didn't pass the health inspection.

The food court was one fail away from being shut down. Imagine a Target with a vacant Food Court/Starbucks. They would have fired whoever was involved.

Supposedly working in Publix is a lot nicer than other places. No idea what the difference is between them and others

Professional man-servant here

It depends on the area, your clientelle, and the level of exclusivity (this goes both ways, poor nibbas dont usually eat 200 dollar steaks or shop at designer clothing stores, and rich people tend not to eat 50 cent tacos and buy garbage from dollar general)

Rich customers, poor customers, locals, foreigners, and flyovers are all going to present you vastly different sets of problems when faced with the same dillema.

Gibs me some context and I can tell you more of what to expect

Yeah it sounds like you were in quite a catch 22. Good on you for standing your ground though.

It's fine most of the time. The major holidays, especially the Christmas time, are pure hell though.

It’s usual just dead boring. Long shifts, repative boring work that you seek out because you aren’t allowed or don’t want to do nothing. There a shit customers, and good customers, but mostly just forgettable customers.

retail is nothing compared to door to door sales shit howbout an angry customer in the middle of the night with a handgun pointed at you

Why are you selling door to door in the middle of the night, you fuckass?

customer service is the worst aspect of it, and IMO the worst aspect of most "normal" jobs

when you're dealing with objects or I.T. or anything non-living, how well your day goes relies entirely upon your ability to pull your weight and make an effort. the harder you push yourself, the better the result. simple

when you're dealing with the general public, no amount of "effort" on your part stops them from being rude, arrogant and totally fucking stupid

i worked behind the reception desk in a very expensive hotel for 5 years and that was bad enough. there's no way i could work in a restaurant or food service or a call center or anything
