hey
homebrewer here, ive been makin mead for about 10 months

nice, ive not made mead yet. Ive done some apple cider, some apple wine, and about 5 or 6 different kinds of beer.
whats your mead recipe?

that looks like a bomb

i already called the cyberpolice, they will backtraced you.

you dun goofed

This is mine.

Ive been following Ken Schramms book pretty much all the way.

15 lbs of honey for a 5 gal batch with nutrient and a pack of Lalvin BM45 I think. I split my first batch into a couple different flavors. The best one was put in secondary fermentation with some cinnamon, clove, ginger, and nutmeg. Surprisingly great stuff for the amount of effort put in.

What is this thread about?

How much would you guess it costs to get into home brewing?

Got a bit too many.
Cars and mechanical shit.
Cooking is one I'm slowly getting into, actually trying a traditional Icelandic Fish Stew cooked over a wood fire tonight.
Anime I guess, but that's a given.
I'm big into Norse mythology and religion, or at least I'm getting there.
I'm trying my hand at wood working, but nothing to show for it yet.
I'd love to try and get into blacksmithing, but the space I have, along with the costs makes that unfeasible yet.

I've been wanting to make my own mead for a while. There's a Farmers Market around here that sells fresh honey, and I can get like, a gallon of the stuff for $30. Thinking of picking it up to try this recipe in the Norse Cookbook I got. Got any tips for it?

Ive been surprised how consistently good 2 gallons concord grape juice and 2 cups of cane sugar turns out.

I got a starter kit from a homebrew website for $260. An absolute bargain if you drink as heavily as I do. After a bit of experimentation you can make exactly the drink that fits your taste for maybe half as much as it would cost from a grocery store.

That's interesting. Please tell me more. How does it taste? How long does it take until it's drinkable?

good old hungarian tv

Try steeping some hibiscus petals in almost boiling water to make a tea. Add that after you've fermented, to taste.

what style of beer you do.
do you do from all grain or the lazy nigger method with the malts.
i have been doing a all grain smokey porter.
Just trying to get it stronger its only at 4.4% atm

Hmmm, the recipe I'm wanting to try has something similar.

I just did their recipe. I wait 4 weeks then rack it off to secondary then give it 4 more weeks before bottling. It probly doesnt need that long but you dont need to age the bottles at all before drinking. If you do age it or make it in a huge enough batch that it lasts a few months, itl mellow out the alcohol burn.

Home brewing for the past year, pretty fun and decent Income considering it’s not legal here

A strong IPA with a hoppy grassy aftertaste©

Rose hips taste frickin weird, a small batch like that is a good idea.

yep, a hoppy as fuck IPA is implied in homebrewing beer.

Idk man, last time i tried to homebrew anything my kvass ended up tasting like piss so i guess i dont have a beer thumb

Fellow grower here.

Nice

Ya, it's supposed to be somewhat historically accurate. A lot of stuff in this cookbook would be looked at rather strangely.

It aint legal where im from, but any tips in growing a bad boy like this in lets say, a closet?

working, smoking meth, addy and weed. quit booze 2 months ago

That's exactly what I do, man. Personal supply in a small closet. 75cm x 75cm area. I can fit 4 automatic plants, I make 'em short and bushy.
Get yourself a decent LED panel, no more than 300w for an area like mine.Buy a small fan, learn about pH and EC levels and you're pretty much done.

I don't have time for a hobby

My hobbies are video game collecting/knife making

Also, try to buy quality seeds. Genetics make all the difference. Go with trusted banks. Stick to auto flowers for a quick batch. Photo periods take longer unless you veg them for only a couple weeks or start them at 12/12.

Attached: Day56.jpg (918x1100, 655K)

Got any pictures of the knife making part? I love knives.

Lifting is a good hobby because it gets you pussy. Takes a few years to get a good amount of muscle but from there the dividends just keep increasing.

I don't really count working out as a hobby. It's more like part of your routine, like eating or showering.

I would love to grow a couple plants for personal use, but my gf would shit a kitten (its not legal here) and my apartment neighbors might smell it

Hiking, gardening, cooking, pc gaming, doing in depth research on a random topic for no reason.

Changing the world. Run a weekly foodbank, a weekly after school program, counsel in formerly homeless transition living center, provide snacks weekly to teacher at alternative learning center, that kinda stuff. Enjoy your brew.

Hell yeah man, quite the learning curve, and takes a lot of effort.

I dont have the space for all-grain so my setup is about half-nigger. I usually use half extract (which i assume you mean by malt) and half grain

Literally everybody showers and eats. .1% of people can deadlift 500 pounds or have 20 inch biceps. So yes lifting and bodybuilding are hobbies dumb shit

Reading is my hobby

Attached: 20190403_135840.jpg (3264x1836, 1.79M)

a dude where I live decided it would be a good idea to sleep on the floor of the room where he was brewing several beers. How did he die?

also the batch in the keg right now is a Kolsch. I usually stick to ales because I dont have a fridge big enough to lager in, usually amber or dark ales are my go-to

>posting from a palm pilot
i snarfed

>Literally everybody showers
Remember where you are.

If you compete then sure, bodybuilding is a hobby. If you just go to the gym and lift, then I don't count that.

I work a dead end retail job for minimum wage but the one thing keeping me alive is clowning/mime gigs. I perform in a semi-traveling circus troupe and I do juggling, hoop dancing, and fire poi routines. learning how to do contortionism from a fellow troupe mate too. if I hadn't found the circus I probably would have blown my brains out at 22.

link or youre lying, he would surely have to be brewing huge batches in a small space to displace enough oxygen to asphyxiate

>6 proxys
lies

>displace enough oxygen
you know CO2 is heavier than air, right?

that's pretty goddam interesting. i've thought often about the old trope of running away to the circus and how that maybe used to be a legit way that people who didn't really fit in society could get have a community and a job, but circuses are pretty much all gone now, without a modern equivalent. so a lot of those people end up NEET basement dwellers or otherwise permanently marginalized. have you thought about/tried to make it a full time gig?

Building electric skateboards

Attached: 1524251522754.jpg (420x414, 132K)

Don't stop doing this. The clown profession is dying out which is unfortunate.

yes, but the release of co2 is a slow process, it takes literally weeks for a significant amount to build even in a sealed chamber. He would have to be in a sealed room with no ventilation for a rather long time to suffocate, even on the ground, so link?

Nerf modding. It's basically making nerf guns shoot harder and making them look cool as shit. You can make some hit like 300 fps. It's great if you like prop making, airsoft/paintball, or tinkering with mechanical stuff.

I like to sharpen things OP

I've definitely tried to make it a full time thing but it's hard work. you have to be 110% dedicated to the lifestyle. I have the drive but not the means yet. i got my start in the burlesque scene and found the circus through that. There's definitely still an active circus culture, you just have to dig deep. you may find it being called "sideshow" or "neo-circus" too. sword swallowers and the like. the city I live in has a fairly active scene and monthly get togethers for performers to gather at a park and trade tips and teach others skills they dont know yet. I love the community. I have a contortionist friend and she makes a full time living just managing/scheduling other performers through the internet. it's crazy. but yeah like you said I'd be a NEET fuckwit if I didnt "run away" to the circus.

any updates to that story with more details about his setup? I can see this happening with several large batches fermenting at once, but no where in that article does it say that he was sleeping on the floor, or that his death was from asphyxiation

I used to stretch the springs and remove air restrictors. Nowadays i hear kids are upgrading the electric ones by overvolting them and upgrading the motors. What sort of mods do you do for power?

thank you, that means a lot. the world is so incredibly serious nowadays and being able to put on my clown face and laugh while I entertain others makes my entire week hating myself while I sell shitty instruments and cds worth it. it's as much an escape from reality for my audience as it is for myself, I feel. some days I'll just set up downtown with an open suitcase and my gear and be so thankful that I've made even 10 bucks. the kids love it too.

i get it with the space, storing half the crap is the problem.
i dont like the flavour of the extracts.
The last extract beer i did was a "stout"that was only 3% and tasted like a dark larger but a bit stronger.
i like the grains but it takes an extra 2hrs to brew over the extracts and i can control the flavour better. i kind of feel at the mercy of the extract tins

That's cool man. How great to have something that both gives you and other people joy. Even if it's always only an avocation, it's more than most people have.

I hadn't heard of fire poi before you mentioned it. Looked it up and now I'm super jealous of your hobbies. What got you started on that path?

Found another link that has some more details, but still lists the cause of death as "unexplained". This article has a neighbor statement
>“There was always a really strong smell of gas, like a cooker, when you walked past the door,” he commented.
but co2 is practically odorless. it has a bit of a sharp sting to it if you get a big whiff, but it doesnt smell like propane or other natural gases the neighbors were smelling.
That said, people are retarded and maybe the neighbor just doesnt know what natural gas smells like, so maybe the dudes beer actually did suffocate him. I think its more likely that it would be a leaking gas canister rather than the actual fermentation. Even the small 5lb tanks like I use have enough gas in them to fill a smallish space with enough co2 to make you pass out. Ive heard stories of peoples canisters leaking in their fridges, and then when they open the fridge they get a large cloud of co2 washing over them, which can obiously be dangerous.

not really a fan of stouts, but the more beer I make the more I find myself liking darker and darker beers.
And absolutely agree about extract kits. Using quality Liquid extract instead of dry powdered extract helps, but I find that the more grain is in the beer the better

you sound like a very wholesome dude. would definitely buy you a steak dinner and have you show me how to juggle. always wanted to learn

I get this. I enjoy DJ'ing as a hobby. It's not anything I could ever do as a full-time job. But I love doing it for free or for little pay because it makes people happy and they dance and sing to the music. I'd imagine you performing for others is similar. Sometimes the best things in life are other people.

kinda ironic how most clowns are/were depressed, makes u think..

forgot to add the link pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/scotland/1655147/home-brew-kit-sparked-evacuation-of-street/
anyway, all Im saying is that I have a hard time believing that the fermentation of beer is the sole culprit here, unless this dude was making industrial sized batches in his own living room.

God bless you, pagliacci.

Attached: 1543178991710.png (1067x1200, 516K)

i feel so lucky to have that outlet, you dont even know. my circus friends got me out of a really depressive time in my life and now i actually look forward to practicing something. everyone is positive and helpful towards one another and everyone has something to teach. sometimes we'll have a gig at a dive bar where the only stage is standing on top of a pool table for 3 people -2 of which will actually he paying attention- but it's always worth it. it's a bummer that the circus/sideshow acts fell out of vogue. it's such a raw and pure form of entertainment.

lol this is hardcore me. just toss in an unhealthy obsession with eating crawdads and corn on the cob

you sound like a chill dude, ill have an extra beer for you

Shooting guns, playing games, camping. Want to get I to brewing in the near future.

Shit dude, if you perform anywhere near Houston, I'd come watch a performance.

do it, browse craigslist for used stuff, so many dudes spend a ton of money on a setup and then realize they dont think its worth the effort

clown boi here, keep rocking that dj shit. the best escape in life is entertainment and if you can provide that for another person, you're doing something incredible. got any of your tracks online I could check out?

welcome down the rabbit hole you will be drinking imperial stouts before you know it.
even the liquid extracts fuck me over.
Easiest way to do an all grain is buy a cheap urn that will boil, and working through all the smart ass jargon grain brewers use and its easy.
set urn to to dray all the sugars out of the grain, wait and hour squeeze the bag, add the water volume of grain removed.
boil the shit out of it for an hour, usually add hops the start of the boil.
then its just like extract brewing

thanks. make that steak into a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and beans, and I'll be all over teaching you

Yeah, I have some stuff on iTunes and Spotify. Just google vxzero.

I have probably spend less than $200 on equipment, and a 5 gallon batch costs about $40 in ingredients depending on where you buy from, and its way better than most mass produces beers they have at the grocery store. My gf's dad has been brewing for like 20 years and he sells the supplies and equipment. He doesnt have any sons (his step son is a weeb) so he sets me up with free ingredients and supplies because he likes to share in his hobby with someone, its a sweet deal

nigger ehip

drink up my dude. what's your favorite kind of beer?
northern california based here so houston is probably out of the question for a while. farthest southeast I've gone is arizona

Book name?

yeah ive made some batches of all grain with my gf's dad, but that was in his shop. My apartment is pretty small, and I'm brewing the wort on an induction coil stovetop, which sucks but hopefully one day Ill have a home with a garage big enough to use and store all the equipment for mashing and finally ditch extract.

Cut your fucking nails

Thats a tough one, especially to pin down to one specific brand. My favorite type of beers are probably red ales. I think my favorite all time beer is St arnolds christmas ale. Its an english strong ale. Last winter I made a copycat 5gal batch of the christmas ale, and it came out delicious
On an unrelated note, homebrewing has likely turned me into an alcoholic

>clownboi
checking out your stuff now. I dig it. very ambient with a bit of a darker undertone while still keep it light hearted and agreeable. you're doing great work, user.

If I'm ever out that way, I'll look up a circus act. There's not nearly enough anymore so I'm sure your's will be THE act and I'll come watch.

Bulb? Is that you?

definitely with you there on the red ale. ain't nothing like a good crisp red. I'm pretty fond of stouts too, I think its lagunitas that makes it (not much of a drinker myself) but it's called imperial and its probably my favorite go to beer. pretty high abv too

whats the secret to good drum beats?

Nice, I like most of new belguims stuff, I just had a Fat Tire a few hours ago

I've found that drum beats shouldn't be quantized to line up exactly on each beat. The beat needs to not be perfect to sound great. Just a little push and pull (a.k.a. swing) added to the beat makes it sound amazing.

Working on old military vehicles is one of my hobbies

I masturbate excessively and play space station 13

New Belgium and Fat Tire is great. Those are my go-to most of the time. I tried this one tonight and it was added to my favorite list.

Homebrewing is intersting the first day when you are cooking and loading your carboy. After that, it's several weeks of boring (with wine). However it gets fun again when you drink it.

heh id love to load up a cargirl if u get my meaning

I've really gotten to enjoy woodburning and cooking. both kind of have the same elements, you gotta know what to add at the right time.

"fun" is a tough word to apply to homebrewing. It's time consuming, its a little demanding (during brewing, fermentation does its own thing), but its very rewarding. Gathering knowledge and supplies can be a lot of work, but there are videos to help, id recommend having someone who is familiar with the process walk you through it. The actual brewing takes a few hours (2-4 depending on your methods, mashing grain takes longer) and you have to stay there to babysit it the entire time its "cooking". Once the wort is brewed you just siphon it to a fermentation vessel, then add yeast once its cooled. Then you siphon it into a secondary fermentation vessel after about a week to separate the beer from the grain, hops, and dead yeast that settle at the bottom. Then after secondary fermentaion you go to either bottling or kegging. I like to keg because its easier than bottling, but that requires additional equipment. Mind you this is a very oversimplified summary, but remember that people have been making beer for literally thousands of years. You could do it if you want, it isnt that complicated.

THIS. you spend hours on brew day sanitizing and preparing and brewing, then you have to wait 2 weeks minimum if you are kegging, and more like a month if you are bottling. I thnk its worth it though. especially if you drink a lot of beer. Its cheaper to brew quality small batch than to buy. although you also have to factor in equipment cost and the value of your time. I enjoy it, though.

No

In my case, the cost of the equipment was worth it. My wine was great. My beer smelled and tasted like feet. I never could figure it out, but the whole hobby was worth every penny! I Made several batches of mead which was expensive but made great Christmas presents. In all, I would recommend it to anyone thinking about brewing. It's not too expensive to get into and it's fun to test the results.

honestly yeah its not very fun. but if you like beer its rewarding

likely had some sort of bacteria contamination. The sugar that the yeast likes to eat is unfortunately great food for all sorts of bacteria. Even if it smells and tastes bad its probably fine to drink though, there are no known harmful pathogens that can survive in beer

> Even if it smells and tastes bad its probably fine to drink though, there are no known harmful pathogens that can survive in beer

That's good to know. I still don't want anything smelling or tasting like foot to be in my mouth, but it's good to know it won't hurt me.

I rather enjoy keeping fit, staying healthy, but as for hobbies, playing music, or practicing martial arts.

Alcoholism and suffering.

Nice, does it cost anything to print out a generic map or something to make content out of ?

Photography (landscape, transport, architecture), cgi, horticulture

quads of /k/

I mostly build tiles and figures. The cost of filament is around 5 cents per figure, tiles are maybe around 20 cents. A spool will last you ages though. For a map, Idunno. I just bought a normal map from chessex for like $35 that we use. Tiles are more for dungeons.

I like shooting rabbits and hiking in the woods/mountains trying to hunt deer. I havent killed a deer yet.
I also like to drive aroynd and try find places to explore but its depressing with no friends.

Homebrewing, beer in general and mountain biking.

Ayyy, also a home brewer. About 8 years in. I'm on a half bbl HERMS setup, two conical fermenters (one in a freezer for lagers, the other with a peltier cooler/heater for ales). Just doing soda kegs since they are more mobile. Also do a bit of cider in the fall.

Between $150 and $150k. Past that, you have to accept that you're a micro brewer.

Been homebrewing since early 2005.
It's a lot of work unless you just use no boil canned kits and keg it, and that canned kit shit still tastes worlds better than the 3.2 piss here in Utah.

Depends how much research you do, your process, and your equipment. I did okay batches with extract, and bumped it up ten notches when I went all-grain. But the real differences were: accurate temperature and pH control in brewing, a conical fermenter with temp control, proper yeast starters and wort oxygenation, and the biggest was a thorough understanding of brewing chemistry, particularly the water.

Since we got some brewers here I'll share a special lil recipe for you to try, haven't been able to do it since I lost my all grain gear.

8lb american 2 row
2lb crystal 60
about 2lb rinsed cooked jasmine rice
2oz simcoe hops added slowly over hour boil
anchor steam yeast
ferment and rack to age on the warmer side
simple but never failed me

I think my hobby is wasting time.

I have so much I should do, but when I come home, I never do any of it. It’s becoming such a problem I may have to move and completely quit my current job. I literally don’t know what to do and this is not the first existential crisis I’ve had in my life - it’s just the first one where I feel like things are actually fucked and I have no future.

It’s absolutely terrifying and I’ve just been drinking to attempt to numb the pain.

Thanks for being here /b. Your like my personal therapist who doesn’t talk back or give advice to me at all - which is slightly helpful, I think. At least I’m talking about shit.. I don’t know.

any set times on the hops or just add it in over the hours or can i just drop a teabag in at the start.
whats with the cooked rice
how warm am i fermenting it
and last wtf does it taste like

If I remember correctly, 1 oz right at the start and just feed in bits as you see fit along the hour boil. You gotta sit there and watch to make sure it doesn't boil over anyway!
The rice makes it adjunct, and with ale yeast like an old style american ale only not shit.
Temperature lower to mid 70s, normal for anchor steam style.
Can't really say how it comes out other than delicious. Part of the fun of homebrewing is doing experiments and variations and maybe stumbling across something amazing.

Also, whole leaf simcoe not the pellets. Pellets suck.

Pellets are more consistent for most people. If you have a reliable supplier, you'll get quality cones that will have expected utilization. But if you're a homebrewing pleb, you'll likely get the shit-end of the crop. Pellets will be more consistent, reliable, and efficient.

i thought cooking the rice may take all the goodies out of it.
might give it a crack, hope its not too fruity
i like my beer malty and smokey
But i never say never

True, just a matter of preference really. Unless they've changed something since I last did boil brewing, those pellets can end up making an irritating thick sludge in the wort. Just always preferred whole hops if I can get em, got a few varieties growing in my yard now.

I've always cooked it and still gotten a unique flavor, not everything escapes from cooked rice or it would have no smell at all once cooked.
It's a moderately malty but not smokey brew, stick to the scottish ales for that.

if you're a hipster douchebag, sure.

It's priceless watching someone judge someone on professional gear while obviously knowing nothing on the subject.

That's something only a ......... hipster does.

Yep, I've only been doing this for over 25 years. So obviously I know nothing.
Moog was great once, now overpriced hipster junk that hasn't yet come up with one new idea.

My hobby is porn. Mainly digging up OC vids, editing them, doing shops over on /r/. Basically a creative cyber pervert.

Oh, and dumpster diving. Sucks that I moved to a small town with not a god damn dumpster in sight.

sweet thanks mate

other tips, if i remember correctly the last time i did a batch.
gentle boil not so much a strong one, to keep away extra caramels besides the 60.
ready earlier rather than later, so check after a month instead of 2 or more. some beers do not improve with age

also don't rush the mashing process, all that extra starch from the rice needs extra time to process and not cause a stuck sparge. hope it turns out well!

normally give the mash about 60 but can blow it out to 90mins
lol you expect it to last 2 months. 2 weeks and its fair game
getting me keen going to have to hit the brew shop next weeks end

I'm a boring bitch, but I try to spend all my free time with my doggos.
Love jogging on the trails and taking them swimming.
I figure they spend enough time doing nothing when I'm at work and sleeping.

Same here, I’m still learning a lot but hope to get a set here and there at a club I know the owner of. Making the most of my younger years by going to as many festivals as I can, South West four is on the table this year the bass music lineup is killer

Back at university I'd smoke a joint in the arboretum and them come back and drink a beer in the communal shower before relaxing for the night in my dorm room with chicken nuggers.

I miss college.

Fucking your mom up her dirty asshole and then screaming TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP as I blow my load, and finally wiping my blood and shitstained dick on your bedroom curtains.... faggot

This feels like a faggotry thread to me.

much luck friend!
wouldn't be a bad idea to double check with iodine for full conversion, all the rice in there with less enzymes can slow the process. or just let it mash extra long

sounds like too much work for me

go live in a farm and grow your own food and attain the peace that surpasses understanding

I enjoy my free time by lying back, watching some evocative tv and having a lovely big wank

Knock that shit up to 2-3 kg/Litre of honey and only 4L water with good enough yeast will produce 16% ABV +/- , been making mad mead for years, latest batch was Lavender and Star Anise came out at 18%

>high quality tabletop scenery

Out of curiosity, who's your target demo? Like what do they tend to do with the props?

Adults who play table top war games, warhammer and the like, its used as terrain.

Ahh, gotcha. That actually would add to the experience. Is it good money?

we just put this one up, usually sells within a week, so yeah moneys ok, but we just do this as a side thing alongside our actual jobs

Yeah, not too bad at all. Do you ever do custom requests?

Is sleeping a hobby? I'm very passionate about it.

Sad bastard

Yeah we're open to them. We're currently working on a custom Warhammer 40k board, that's where the real money is

Do you sell a lot at that price? Quality isn't bad, but damn.

In most cases war gaming is an expensive hobby, they expect high prices and there willing to pay the price.

Yeah, I get that. I played Eldar for a while. If you can that much for 'em, good on you.
